Not until I did some experiments ... :) The "Cycle detected" message is apparently (from "strings" output) new in Solaris 9 "du". It seems that it happens whenever one applies "du" to a directory tree in which there are "visible" .snapshot directory entries (i.e. one or more NFS mount points). Presumably it's getting upset by the duplicate inode numbers appearing in snapshots. Lots of Unix utilities (especially GNUish ones) have had similar problems in the past. [Of course, it's not unreasonable to take the line that their confusion is quite justified, and that NetApp have a design fault here.] Chris Thompson Email: cet1(a)cam.ac.uk

I am getting this error when I try to do a "du -sk *" some netapp directories mounted on my solaris 2.9 oracle database server. If I am in the directory that contains the files it works fine. Vol copy'ing a ZCS volume to a BCS one

What happens when one does a "vol copy" from a volume that has zoned checksums active to one that is made out of BCS (520-byte sector) disks? Do the blocks that were reserved for zone checksums on the source volume become free when the target volume is put online? Or does the latter remain a zoned checksum volume even though it is made up of BCS discs? The documentation doesn't seem to be very clear on this point, and I can't do the experiment (yet) ... Edward, The drives in your system are X225B. They are ZCS 36GB disks. You can use the X224A, X225A, X225B or X225C which are all ZCS 36GB disks for the StorageShelf FC9. I've got an old F720 filer that needs two spare 36GB disks in a hurry - got two RAID sets, each with 1 failed disk, which makes me feel kinda vulnerable. I'm not familiar with the types of disks that are compatible. This could be an RSH issue. In 5.X FilerView used RSH to talk to the filer. Try checking the value of rsh.enable and whether you can rsh to the filer (modulo other security settings). I know this used to work a while back but it no longer does. I don't use it but another admin here would like to be able to use it to make changes. It works fine on the three other netapps we have here. This one is running an older version of OS though, it's at NetApp Release 5.3.5R2. Under options httpd.admin.enable is set to on. I can get in and bring up the java window, i don't get the error message until I try to access something that requres the root password. When I provide it I get the following error: Error communicating with host 10.209.68.211 msg=Connection refused nothing shows up in the message log for errors. Is there a way to turn on logging for this to try and get more info about what's happening? I've also tried disabling it and enabling it and that doesn't seem to fix the problem. I know the password is correct because I can telnet into the console just fine. Could it be looking for a different password other than the root password? I also ran the password command and changed the root users password and then tried to access filerview with the new password and that didn't work either. Any help would be really appreciated Thanks Dan

Yes. Do you really need more inodes than 1 per 4 K? That would mean a LOT of really small files. 4 K is the minimum size of any file in WAFL (the write anywhere file layout) that Data OnTap uses.
