limit to number of files in a directory

Hi all, are there any limits to the maximum number of files (or subdirectories) a Netapp NFS mounted directory can handle? In our case (if it matters) we are looking at Linux 2.4.18 using NFS v3/tcp to a Netapp running 6.1.2R3. We are thinking of a directory with 500,000+ files in it. Hello, I would like to know can netapp filer attach to our Solaris server as a DiskArray. Here is our goal: We have to Solaris servers will run Oracle database. These two server will have Veritas Server Clustering and also will need a set of DiskArray attach to them. Veritas will control these disk as it own volume. Thus I would like to know can Netapp filer get involve on what we tryning to do? Or I just have to but DiskArray from Sun. Any help would appreciated. Thanks, C-

2 part tape question

Part the First: I have a Vixel switch that is attached to the library via fiber. The filers plug into the Vixel and each filer sees all 6 drives, but not each other. I can assign all 6 drives to a single filer but I can't assign them to any of the others. I know this sounds like SSO but it's really much simpler. All I want is to use a robotic drive number for 2 different filers. I'm not looking for NBU to figure out anything or manage connections. The goal is to stagger schedules and allow each filer to use all 6 drives when it's their turn. Part the Second: Has anyone done a multi-tape snapmirror using robotics? Currently I have to unmount the media and mount a new media for snapmirror to finish. I would like to snapmirror a 400gb volume to tape (it would use about 7 tapes) without having to do a manual unload/load at the end of each tape. cannot change nis.server option ?

Following my precedent email it appears I cannot change the value of the command : options nis.server It keeps the old value and which is the old NIS server I have reboot the filer after modify the /etc/rc file but it does not work ... I am stuck ... thanks for any info -- Frank Bonnet

netgroup file ?

hi we are migrating from NIS to LDAP as OnTap does not support native LDAP I have setup a NIS-LDAP gateway. I plan to use that gateway as NIS server to let the filer grab users UIDs. My question concerns the "netgroup" file that is actually propagated from our old NIS server, the NIS gateway is not able to propagate that map. Should I put it in the /etc directory of the filer to be used by it ? according I modify the nsswitch.conf file like the following netgroup: files thanks -- Frank Bonnet

An example line from our Perl based backup program: $cmd = " rsh $HOST </dev/null 'dump ".$dump_level."ufb u$DRIVE,u$DRIVE,u$DRIVE,u$DRIVE,u$DRIVE,u$DRIVE,n$DRIVE 63 $dump_target' >$scratch.dump; "; From the man pages: ---------------------- To make a level 0 dump of the entire file system of the root volume to a local tape drive (no rewind device, unit zero, highest density), with each tape file in the dump being less than 2 GB in size, without operator intervention, using a tape stacker, with four tape files written per tape, assuming that the dump requires no more than 10GB, use: toaster> dump 0ufbB nrst0a,nrst0a,nrst0a,urst0a,rst0a 63 2097151 / This will: Write the first three files to the norewind device, so that they, and the next dump done after them, will appear consecutively on the tape. Write the next file to the unload/reload device. This will cause the stacker to rewind and unload the tape after the file has been written and then load the next tape. Netapp hard drive tests

Does anyone actually know what tests Network Appliance hard drives get put through before they get the NetApp stamp of approval? Someone mentioned they reject like 30% of their drives. Is that true? Because that number seems pretty high to me. If it so, I would like to know exactly what tests they use (and what figures they use) to determine whether or not to reject a drive. Steve

informix on a filer

I know there has recently been a flurry of mails regarding Oracle on a filer but is anyone running Informix on one? I ask because there are alot of issues with the whole Informix/Onbar kludge that we are running into in an effort to evaluate this. Netapp has been involved in the preliminary discussions and will be in the future as well but I wanted to get an idea from real people in the real world as to the problems you solved and others you ran into. Here's a primer of what we think are the benefits: 1) snapshots - much faster than tape backup, takes minimal disk space 2) snapmirror - easy DR 3) snaprestore - fast recovery from an archive (snapshot) for testing and/or devel 4) snapvault - able to take snapshots every 5 minutes (avoid logical logs altogether) and migrate them to R100, increased retention period due to minimal space requirements 5) system recovery - data resides on filer so cpu becomes a FRU Here are a couple of issues/questions regarding the above: Can all Informix data (i.e., database, binaries, etc.) reside on nfs leaving only system files on the cpu (i.e. system, services, vfstab)? Can snapshots every 5 minutes really replace logical logs if 5 minutes is an acceptable point-in-time recovery period? Can snapshots be used to get a reliable backup without quiescing the database? In the event that logical logs are still required we would write them to mirrored internal drives. Has anyone managed to write these logs to nfs?
