Block sizes

A question about block sizes on NetApp disks. My impression is that disk access occurs in blocks. So if I write 1 byte to a disk, at some level the OS has a block in cache, updates the block, then writes that block out to disk. If I write 20K, then it probably affects multiple blocks. If this is true, then it might be useful to know the underlying block size - because if I could ensure that my application wasn't spanning multiple blocks when I didn't need to be, I could give the physical disks a bit less of a hard time. Does anyone know how to find this out? Or is this all wrong, and the access doesn't occur in blocks? Thanks, Edward.

most of the old-timers already know this, but Colin points out that this is hard to find in the documentation...for scripting and such, using the share-name CIFS.HOMEDIR will cause the filer to connect "you" with "your" CIFS home directory (if such a homedir exists and if no actual share named CIFS.HOMEDIR exists). for Ontap 6.0 or above, the share name ~ (tilde) also works. for example, net use * \\filer\cifs.homedir will connect me to \\filer\joe-user if I am logged on as joe-user, or will connect me to \\filer\Administrator if I am logged on as Administrator, and so on. > in your place, I would create a Dfs > entry like this > \\DfsServer\Dfsroot\filerHome --> \\filer\cifs.homedir > or like this (if using Ontap 6.0 or above) > \\DfsServer\Dfsroot\filerhome --> \\filer\~ > > "cifs.homedir" and "~" are mapped by the filer to > "my CIFS homedir" (if such a homedir exists). > > Jim Uren, who hasn't tried this himself. Hello Toasters. Steve's reply was the fix. We changed exports to allow root and the problem disappered. Hello Toasters. I've come across an odd cp problem from a Linux boxen to a NetApp filer. Typically these filers are mounted by the linux boxen simply for read-only purposes, but are actually read-write mounted. Some of our admins tried to cp files from the linux box up onto the filer, but we get an error that is unexpected. The file copies, but I don't like the error. Any ideas are helpful. Edward, What do your Solaris systems look like? There are a number of things that can be done to get Sun systems, and especially their NICs, to coexist with Filers. Whether you're in native or mixed mode should have nothing to do with the Netapp's, since the netapps are not domain controllers, and native mode just means that you can't have NT 4.0 domain controllers. Being in native mode does not mean that all your clients must be win2k... http://www.2000tutor.com/tutorials/modes.htm From a white paper at http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3113.html Filers may be installed into either mixed-mode or native-mode active directory domains. Mixed-mode domains resemble the Windows NT or pre-Windows 2000 domain environments. Native domains use and expose the active directory infrastructure. Both domain styles support pre-Windows 2000 computers. The difference lies in the administrative structure and methods. The filer will attempt to sense what type of domain exists on the network. Filers running Data ONTAP 6.1 will first search for an active directory domain controller by querying DNS for an active directory/LDAP server.* If the filer cannot locate an active directory server, it will default to looking for a Windows NT domain controller using the NetBIOS protocol. So I'm wondering if anyone is using microsofts dfs and the cifs.homedir functionality on their netapp together? I'd like to be able to point my users homedirs (Win2k) at a dfs share and from their direct them to \\netapp\username but it's not clear if I can make this work. it would be nice becuase then if/when we decide we need a new/different netapp I only have to change the name once and not for each user. I'm not really convinced that I can make this work but I thought I might ask. -- Colin E. Library device not created

Hi we have a HP DLT 8000 connected to our F85 ( 6.1.1.R2 ) and we are not able to access the library we can dump to a tape but cannot use the library thru NDMP . mcxx devices are not created ... do we have to create them manually or is it automated when the filer boot up ? ( we have reboot it without any effect ) thanks

Does anyone know when Netapp plans on supporting HVD Seagate LTO tape drive? I know they support the LVD Seagate LTO in 6.1.2.
