The reason there are two pools is so that each of the plexes (copies) of the volume can be in a separate pool for fault isolation. The pools are created such that a loop or adapter failure cannot take out both plexes. > 2. Can disk spares be shared amongst disk pools? Normally spares are specific to a single pool. The exception would be in the case where no spare is available in the same pool as a failing disk AND the failing disk leaves the volume in the position where another failure could lead to the loss of the volume. -Steve > > many thanks > > Matt >

Hello Toasters, I am about to implement a cluster of two F820's each with three DS14 shelves. To complicate things I am going to use SyncMirror to mirror a couple of the more important volumes. Does anyone have any experiences they would like to share having a similar setup? I would particularly like to find the answer to the following: 1. Can disks in the same volume be spread over 2 disk pools? 2. Can disk spares be shared amongst disk pools? many thanks Matt

Simon, We have a lot of SUN machines here. (SF880, 480, 280, SB1000, SB2000). Sun Support recommended us to upgrade the firmware of all SEAGATE disks fc of 36GB and 72GB, because an Sun internal technote notice that due to an electrostatic problem, a disk could lose his label, so crash... They recommend us to upgrade the firmware of all Seagate fc disks with the following reference : ST 373405fc 72GB ST 336605fc 36GB May be you could contact Seagate for more informations. Ndmpcopy is in Data ontap? Excellent! It is a very easy to use tool, and produces a very reliable copy. one point though - and I am sure you know this - the byte count for your newly created directories will be different from your originals. Yeah, we had 1 or 2 36G fail within about 3-6 months. No big deal, NetApp had replacements on the way within a few hours. Hello Frank, If any of your filers is running Ontap 6.2 or above, then you should be able to use the 'ndmpcopy' command on the filer itself to make the copy. Ndmpcopy was designed specifically for such migrations, so it pretty much will work. Hi, I have had to replace two of our 36Gb Seagate Cheetah disks in the last 3 months. This is on a shelf that's just over a year old. Has anyone else noticed these disks fail regularly?
