Microsoft Cluster Server and Netapps

First thing I'll say is that I know almost nothing about the way Windows NT or 2000 works, and when someone tries to explain it to me, I always wonder why a simpler and more direct UNIX-like approach wasn't used. But anyway... :) Is anyone using Netapps as a data storage backend for MSCS-aware applications? I've read the white paper on SQL Server 7 and MSCS at http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3084.html, but do those principles apply to any clustered application? I read Microsoft's own MSCS FAQ, and although it starts off saying it needs a shared storage backend, it goes on to mention only shared SCSI devices... nothing about FibreChannel or CIFS. It also needs a shared "quorum" disk, which somehow allows MSCS to determine which servers in the cluster are down (but the FAQ doesn't say how exactly the negotiation is done). More specifically, has anyone deployed the e-Assist suite of CRM applications on filer backends? The vendors says they use MSCS for clustering, and recommend local RAID storage for all the servers. Given that they say 35 dual-CPU servers are needed to handle 1000 users (ridiculous, but that's another story), I'm not particularly thrilled to have to maintain locally-attached storage for all of them, and I would rather take advantage of the existing pair of F740s. Hoping someone can help me differentiate conventional wisdom ("you can't run databases on NAS") from true wisdom ("sure you can, if you set things up right") when it comes to NT/2000 clustering... thanks. -- Brian Tao (BT300, taob(a)risc.org) "Though this be madness, yet there is method in't"

Data ONTAP 6.1 & Budtool 4.6.1

Is anyone running DataONTAP 6.1 and backing it up (via ndmp) with Budtool 4.6.1 (either over the network or direct connected)? Any comments? If it matters, this is on a F760. Regards, Audrey

Solaris as ndmp server?

Is there software that will run on Solaris and allow it to use ndmp? I am trying to migrate some data from a NetApp to a SAN box and would like to use ndmpcopy from the filer to the Solaris server instead of rsync. Hi Jan, I think this is a problem with setting up the NDMP connection. First... is matterhorn reachable from the client where Veritas is installed? Try the ping command. Next, could you verify that the password for user root on the filer is indeed the same as what is registered with veritas? If not, reconfigure Veritas set_ndmp_attr. To help debug further, run the command "ndmpd debug 50" on the filer console. Now run the set_ndmp_attr -verify again. See if you get any ndmp logs printed on the console. If you do, the NDMP connection/authentication is fine. And we can proceed to the robot. Let me know if you need more help or run into more trouble :-). Thanks, Amol. Qtree Utilization Alerts

I am looking for a tool to send alerts in the form of email or NT alerts when a Qtree reaches some threshold or percentage (say 80%) of it's quota. I want to be able to extract or construct the alert only for certain Qtrees. Our Qtree naming standard makes it simple to identify an NTFS Qtree. I've thought about automatically generating the Qtree report and writing a tool to parse the information out of the report and generate any alerts needed. Any tools or suggestions are welcome. We have similar performance problems with the Legato NetApp client. The NetApp's that we're backing up this was are old F520's, and we get no more that about 1.2MB/sec during backups (but get easily over 6MB/s during regular heavy I/O). Looking at mrtg graphs of the filer during backups has shown the problem: CPU. While these Legato dumps are running, the CPU is held about 95% busy! Since we only use Unix/NFS mounts off the filers, we're about to start backing up by NFS mounts to our backups host. We'll try ndmp at a later stage. I authorosize access to the NDMP host as follows: set_ndmp_attr -auth matterhorn root after which I'm asked to give me the password (twice). We use a similar configuration with HP servers (3 machines in an MC/ServiceGuard cluster), and I can say that ORACLE locks database and control files, so I don't think it's possible that 2 different machines open the same database. BUT, one problem we get is that : - When a node running ORACLE database is down (hardware problem for example), files stay locked - It's then impossible to start the same database on an other node. The only standard issue is to restart the first node so that locks are free (but this issue is not availabe if the node has a real hardware problem!!!) Why not configure the aix servers as a hacmp cluster and define the oracle instance as a resource group? It seems most people on this list are using NDMP for backup of their filers. However, I would like to avoid that if I can.
