Performance issue

Has anyone seen intermittent problems when users try to save Excel or Powerpoint files to a share on the filer? Also, what are some of the strategies for dealing with oplock break timeout issues? I've been working with NetApp support on these issues but I'd like other opinions. I'm running an 820 filer, DATAOntap 6.1.1r1, and I have a 4-port, 10/100 full duplex vif.

Nixon - By default the filer updates the NIS group cache once a day. Bug in /etc/sysconfigtab (ONTAP 6.1.1R1)

Hmm, just noticed (after returning home after a service window) that the filer I just installed another FC card (X2030B) in slot 2, didn't like the card in that position. The error message in the autosupport mail was: sysconfig: QLogic ISP 2100 32-bit Fibre Channel card (PN X2030B) in slot 2 must be in one of these slots: 8,7,6,3,3,1. It didn't hit me untill I spent 10 minutes talking to someone at the frontline of NetApp Support, that I did install the card in the correct slot (I did verify with the system configuration tool in NOW before installing). I blame the time of night, but as more time spent looking at the error message, I still could not shake the thought that something was wrong with the pattern "8,7,6,3,3,1" According to the lady, (and BUG 54796) the work-around was to ignore the error (slot 2 is supported) or move the card and wait for the next release of ONTAP. I edited the sysconfig instead to read allow F740 X2030B 3 8,7,6,3,2,1 1 and 'voila', sysconfig -c did not complain anymore. RE: Upgrade from F740 to F840

Fairly straight forward. There is documentation out there if you search the NOW site. I have it but, it's on my other PC. I'll send it to you when I get a chance. Basically, all you do is an OnTap upgrade. Just unzip the new system files, not the boot disks, in the /etc directory, enter "download", halt the Filer. Swap heads and boot up. Be careful about things like NIC slot numbers, hostnames, netbios names, ip addresses, DNS, NIS and things like that. Other words, if you're using the onboard ethernet on your 740, its name is 'hostname'-e0. If you go to Gb-E or even another 10/100 port on the 840, your host name will change to 'hostname'-e8 or something.... This may screw up your DNS and possibly NIS. So, my point is, review the entire config and think about what may change and the possible ramifications. It seems my filer (F720, ONTAP 5.3.6R2) caches NIS group lookups even if nis.group_update.enable is set to off. Upgrading Snapmirror-System 5.3.7R3 to 6.0.3

Hi all, we are planning tomorrow upgrading two snapmirrored F740s from 5.3.7R3 to 6.0.3 . Questions: 1. Which system do we upgrade first? ( destination or source filer ? ) 2. Turn OFF snapmirror prior to upgrade? 3. At what time can I restart the mirror ? -- after "vol status -c" tells me checksums are active ? Note: This could last probably two weeks until there are no 5.x snapshots anymore. -- or directly after both filers are up with the new Ontap 6.x ? -- is it necessary to delete all snapshots - to speed up the WAFL upgrade on both systems -- or is it ok to delete just the snapshots on the destination filer ? 4. And is there something else to consider ? I did not find any doku on this. Thanks for help and advise Phil

mailbox disks invaild ?

Hi fellow toasters, I am seeing "but takeover of partner is disabled due to reason : mailbox disks invalid." error in messages. We have two F630s that are "suppose" to be clustered (Fiber) but failed due to above problem. Also, there are a lot of "Data underrun" errors on root volume disks in the messages as well. According to the NOW site, I could run fctest to find out if there is any hardware problems which I am planning on doing. Just wondering if anyone has seen this problem or has experienced it before.
