subst cmd problem - more

toaster folk, mark muhlestein was gracious enough to read my pktt traces. it seems eventhough i am pointing directly to a dir with subst: subst h: \\filer\users\a\adam the command tries to get attribs from \\filer\users\a. so eventhough i had cifs.bypass_traverse_checking on and even an X perm on \\filer\users\a subst got mad. putting some level of read on \\filer\users\a seems to correct it. subst h: \\filer\users\a\adam then works. right now i have R,X on it. any comments? thanks -- regards

hi, our homedir structure is /vol/vol0/users/a/adam we want to use the subst cmd instead of 'net use' because we go below the share. and since we have the first letter of the userid in there we can't use the ontap homedir option. however, we can't get subst to work as a user. C:\WINNTSRV>subst q: \\filer\u7\k\kusr1 Path not found - \\filer\u7\k\kusr1 subst works fine as admin. u7 is an ntfs qtree. kusr1 has full control over its dir. cifs.bypass_traverse_checking on is set. i also gave kusr X rights on u7 and u7\k. no diff. filer is 760 with ontap 6.1.1r2. volume is unix style. anybody ever get this to work? any suggestions? thanks. -- regards

Purging classified files from F840

I need some assistance in tracking down a specific question concerning our new F840 with release 6.1.1R2. When it's introduced into our production environment next month, it will operate in an unclassified (but sensitive) environment. If a user inadvertently saved a document classified "secret" to the filer, what is the DoD-approved method to completely wipe the file from the volume? Thanks in advance for the help!

Not a direct answer, but a related subject... If your environment is subject to DoD restrictions related to data classification, then you may wish to ensure you have the warranty uplift for non-returnable disks. NetApp cannot accept returned disks under warranty that have been degaused or otherwise modified to purge data to satisfy classification requirements, as this will nullify their warranty with the OEM manufacturer (it is well known that NetApp is a software company and their disks are - or at least were - all Seagate or IBM). You will be charged for replacement disks, if you do not purchase this uplift. Hope this is useful, even if it does not directly address your question. We too have experienced similar performance issues on the same OS version. However, our users are using Trend OfficeScan for virus scanning, not NAV. We have an open case with NetApp, but so far they have provided us with no information. If this is a widespread problem with this OS version, I would like to know when a patch is expected, if anyone knows. Thank you. David, Exactly what kind of issues are you seeing. I have the exact same setup except I have Gigabit instead of 100Mb. The issue primarily seems to be opening Office files from a share can take 30+ seconds. Other files types don't seem to be such an issue although I've personally seen a tiny text file take 20 seconds to open in Notepad. I've been the lone voice in the wilderness claiming it's not a Filer problem although it sounds like that might not be entirely true. We did see that running NAV with network drive checking enabled significantly made file access slower. We've done extensive testing and trouble shooting with the local NetApp folks. They discovered the NAV problem. The biggest reason I've not been looking at the Filer as a source of the problem is we've experienced the exact same behavior when accessing files from a share on an NT server. That in conjunction with some packet captures we've done seem to point to a problem with NT's TCP/IP stack. The stack starts out using very small packets and takes forever to ramp up to a decent packet size (Win2K is much faster - in tests a Win2K box on 100Mb ran laps around an NT server using Gigabit). We also use NIS as our primary means of authentication on the Filer and we still haven't ruled this out as an issue. I'm certainly interested in learning more about your problem and everything you learn/hear. This has been made a "top priority" for me to resolve and it's been frustrating because there doesn't seem to be a "smoking gun" and in the meanwhile management and users are cursing the good name of NetApp. Michael Cope Unix Systems Administrator Isis Pharmaceuticals mcope(a)isisph.com

We've had the same issue in isolated cases on our filers running 6.1R1P1. Our clients are running NAV CE. What have you found out about Norton Antivirus Corporate edition in this combination?
