Instead of reading & examining each block, as is done in the non-DAR selective recovery case, the tape agent (NDMP mover) uses "space block" operations to position the tape to the tape block in which each requested file begins. It iterates this (swap tapes if req'd, position to next file, recover file) operation until all requested files are recovered. Best, Jim

Configuration

Ok, I am wondering if I can make this work I have a filer with that needs to be redundant (clustered). The data on the filer is cache data so it can be thrown out (i.e. not critical) but the machine has to be 24x7 machine. If any part of one of the machines die, it must stay up. Therefore, If I cluster the box, how do I make it so that if the shelf fails for Netapp1 (I only have one shelf per head) Netapp1 will be able to grab the shelf on netapp2 and keep going. Could someone please direct me where I can get White Papers on the subject of Oracle on NetApp filers? I have bunch of DBAs on my back considering buying their own filers but before they do they would like to see some papers on issues around placing Oracle on filers, specifically performance! Sounds like a standard NFS issue - the filer's idea of time is almost certainly slightly ahead of the time on the client(s). ls will see a timestamp in the future (as far as the client is concerned) and just print the date in the ls output, until the client's clock catches up with the file metadata. > > Wondering if anyone has come across the same problem/feature! Syslog

I have an interesting problem. Maybe someone could help me. I am trying to get syslog on a netapp filer to log remotely. I have placed the exact commands into the filer syslog.conf for local and remote logging. I also pinged the remote server to make sure that I could get to it in the first place. I am currently logging to /etc/messages but not to the remove server: Here is what my stuff looks like a rdfile of the syslog.conf (names and IPs were changed to protect the innocent) #5-30-2000 The syslog admin host is <remote box> cron,daemon,kern,syslog.alert;cron,daemon,kern,syslog.err;cron,daemon,kern,s yslo g.crit;cron,daemon,kern,syslog.emerg @10.0.0.1 auth,cron,daemon,kern,syslog.alert;auth,cron,daemon,kern,syslog.err;auth,cro n,da emon,kern,syslog.crit;auth,cron,daemon,kern,syslog.emerg;auth,cron,daemon,ke rn,s yslog.warning /etc/messages This seems legitimate. F630 problems?

A client of mine has a loaner F630. He's having very many issues with this box and a linux client. From this point just assume we've done all the nfsv3 patches, dhiggens, etc. Is there any issues with this box and the ontap version? ash> version NetApp Release 5.3.4R2: Sun Nov 21 13:29:37 PST 1999 ash> Basically the server just stops responding completely. Can get requested slot, etc. We've tried tcp mounts, this doesn't seem to make a difference. The problem is pretty severe that it leads me to believe that it's a netapp bug. I've personally never touched anything other then a F740 with the latest ontap installed. Jay, Mike is right, SecureAdmin 1.0 is a product sold separately that installs a SSH server (Secure Shell protocol) on your filer running Data ONTAP 5.3.x. It supports SSH 1.x clients only. It uses RSA for key echange (Host/Server key up to 1024 bits) and DES (56 bits) or 3DES for data encryption. Filer commands and your login name + password are therefore encrypted when passed over the network to your remote filer. Also we cannot include it with Data ONTAP due to US encryption export regulations that apply to such products and royalties paid to RSA. Since June 2000, SecureAdmin 1.0 is also available to customers based oustide the US and Canada (except Government type of end-users) Please contact your NetApp sales representative for more information on how to get a copy of SecureAdmin 1.0. and on exceptions that apply to certain Government type of end-users (Utilities, ISPs, Telcos, Health institutions, etc). RE: Need terminator for one of the disk shelfs.

Jay: There is an easy visual way to tell if your disk shelf(s) need a FC-AL terminator. If you see two fans on the back of the disk shelf, then you are looking at an FC-7 or FC-8 disk shelf. In this case, you would need to terminate the loop with a FC-AL terminator. If you see three fans on the back of the disk shelf, then you are looking at an FC-9 shelf. An FC-9 shelf does NOT have to be terminated. Another way to verify that you have an FC-9 is that you will have two power supplies with green buttons on the left hand side of the shelf - the older shelfs did not have green buttons on the power supplies. As far as terminating the filer, check the back of the filer. Towards the right rear of the filer, there will be an FC-AL port. If you see one or more PCI-based FC-AL adapter cards installed, then you should terminate the FC-AL port on the back of the filer and connect the disk shelf to the FC-AL card. Hope this proves helpful.
