Hello All,
I want to migrate the contents of a small file server to an 8.3 SVM and end up with the SVM having the same name in DNS, NetBIOS and the AD.
If this were a 7-mode vFiler I could re-run "cifs setup" and change the name to the existing name (after I'd powered down the old file server).
Can I do this in 8.3? While I can see commands for renaming an SVM that only appears to rename the SVM itself, not to do anything to the AD.
I can see how to add and remove netbios aliases (WINS entries) but again, nothing to do with the AD.
Do I have to remove and re-add the CIFS server? And lose all the CIFS shares? Or is there a way to rename the puppy?
Randy in Seattle
Randy,
Hi, the following article describes the procedure for what you're trying to do:

There is no rename on "cifs modify" so you have to delete and re-add... then recreate all shares, also name-mappings, and autohome directory settings. You can modify the domain membership if switching domains though. It is easier to rename the dns record or you can also netbios alias in 8.3, but we just had a case where we changed the name and recreated the settings.
Also, a vserver rename command needs to have vserver peering removed prior...and prior to removing the peer you need to break all mirrors so vserver rename can be a bit of work to recreate as well when snapmirror/snapvault are in use.

This is something I'm planning on doing soon- we have file servers that we migrated to another NAS vendor, and now it's time to migrate them to Netapp. We'll be creating the SVMs initially as the proper name with a _temp in the AD account, which we'll use to robocopy the data. Once it's time for the cutover, we'll do a final sync during the outage, and then take over the old IP address and rejoin the Netapp SVMs to the domain with the proper names (no _temp). This will require us to recreate the shares and homedir settings, and I consider myself lucky that I don't have replication or name mappings.

Assuming that KB 1011142 is indeed wrong, do you have possibility to add SVM initially to a different domain? “cifs modify” allows domain changing so it should be easy to move it in place then. For pure data copy this domain need not even have any relation to “production” domain; but for setting shares access rights and/or user mapping it probably needs at least one-way trust.

The kb was for 7-Mode, not cDOT so does not apply. We cannot rename the cifs server name. We can change modify domain so that would work.
I did see that 7mtt had an issue when cdot was in a different domain though but if a robocopy or other host migration (PeerSync for example) then no issue. So you could have the same netbios name on a different domain then modify to the production domain after deleting the legacy system and preserve the name.

Thank you all for your replies.
Sounds like bad news and good news. I can't rename it. I do have a "spare" AD I could add it to with the final name and then move it to the proper AD later. However, I worry about the permissions fallout.
I think I'll end up biting the bullet and recreating the (fifty-odd) CIFS shares. And waiting to set up peering/mirroring until after the rename. Good times.

Well, KB says "for 7-mode do this", "for c-mode do that". Which is why fixing it is important.

Agreed…the KB says for cDOT but doesn’t mention you need to recreate the shares and cifs configuration, where 7-Mode with a cifs terminate and cifs setup to a new name you do not.

So, non-disruptive CIFS rename is coming in a future release.
As for shares, you can back them up/recreate them with this powershell script. (script would need to be tested before you rely on it, FYI… I’m still ironing out differences between releases)

Also, a vserver rename command needs to have vserver peering removed prior...and prior to removing the peer you need to break all mirrors so vserver rename can be a bit of work to recreate as well when snapmirror/snapvault are in use.

Hello All,
I want to migrate the contents of a small file server to an 8.3 SVM and end up with the SVM having the same name in DNS, NetBIOS and the AD.

I had resolved to abandon this issue and created a new SVM to replace the one I had hoped to rename but after spending yesterday playing with the 7MTT it looks like I have to open the can again.
We are beginning the work of retiring a v3170 pair and moving 15-20 vFilers to a new pair of 8.3 clusters (one primary, one DR). We had planned to make heavy use of the 7-Mode Transition Tool but after a day with it yesterday I'm not sure it's the silver bullet we were hoping for.
We moved a test vFiler more or less successfully but the finished product, while it had data volumes named the same as on the original, and the shares and exports were created on the new SVM, was not the magic twin of the source we'd hoped for. It was still named as it was when we set it up as a target for the original, and while we were able to rename the SVM and its volumes, we find ourselves back at the point where we need to rename the puppy in AD.
I did make a little progress. If I stop CIFS (from the CLI) for the vserver, and delete the AD object, I can run the vserver cifs modify command, re-enter AD Domain Admin credentials, and the SVM is added back to the AD. But with an AD name of the original target SVM (the xxx-NEW the 7MTT target was named). Despite the SVM now having the "SVM" name matching the original source.
Here's the question. Where is the name of the "CIFS Server" setting kept? If there was a way to change that for the SVM while CIFS was stopped and the old object had been deleted from the AD, I'm hopeful I could re-add it and not lose my other settings i.e. CIFS shares.
Anybody know where/how to change the name of the "CIFS Server" so the SVM can be re-added to the AD with the new name?

Well, KB says "for 7-mode do this", "for c-mode do that". Which is why fixing it is important.

Assuming that KB 1011142 is indeed wrong, do you have possibility to add SVM initially to a different domain? “cifs modify” allows domain changing so it should be easy to move it in place then. Hmm ... that's not what KB ID: 1011142 mentioned previously say. It does not say CIFS server has to be deleted. If this KB is wrong it would be nice if someone who can verify it comments on it so it could be corrected.
