We are going to start a new FC disk loop. The new shelf is DS14mk2 with ESH2 modules and we will connect it to a X2050B-R5 adapter. This is a FAS960c clustered pair running DOT 7.1.1.1 so we will connect the shelf to both heads. We want to do the same thing with a second shelf on the other head.
Can this be done without taking down the filers? I checked NOW and only found instructions for hot adding a shelf to an existing loop,
A little more info...
We have a downtime scheduled to install the new FC adapters in the heads. We have two new shelves in a new cabinet for which we do not have power yet. If the circuits have been run before the downtime, then we are OK. If not, then we will install the adapters in the heads and connect the shelves later when we have power, but we want to avoid a second downtime for that.
If we must power down the head to add the first shelf, then we can't use cf takeover and giveback because the shelf is connected to both heads.
Another possibility would be to run extension cords to the new shelves and when we get power to the cabinet, switch the power plugs one at a time so the shelves don't lose power.
The netapp cabinet is powered by 220V circuits, and I suppose the outlets in the cabinet are also 220V. Can we run extension cords from 110V circuits to power the shelves temporarily?

Hi Stephen,
We have done this one time and it worked.
One important thing is that you have to configure the FC-port the right way, because changes of FC-Port-type need a reboot.
Regards
Jochen

Hi Guys I've done it before too, and I'm 92% sure it's supported, but I'm checking anyway. Long ago, the commands to enable the port were in secret ninja mode and therefore unsupported.
The adapter config (initiator/target) applies to models with built-in ports that are configurable. This currently applies to FAS3000 and FAS6000 (FAS270 autoconfigures based on presence or absense of the FCP license). FAS960 only has adapters in PCI slots, and the cards (at least the current cards) can only be what they were bought as. In this case, X2050* is only an initiator. X1033 would be a target for FAS900 series.
Enjoy!
Peter

I'm not entirely sure it's 100% supported, my guess is the big gotcha would be if a cluster takeover can still take place during a cluster reconfiguration process.
Gr,
Nils
I got confirmation from the engineer who tests all this that hot-add first shelf to an unused initiator is supported.
Share and enjoy!

this works fine. we have done this several times on our clusters before without any issues.

I have done this a few times and it worked fine for me. I did find that in some cases you will get an extra ASUP about a cluster configuration error, when one node has already completed loop initialisation, but the other node hasn't yet. This will self-correct in like a minute, once booth loops have been initialised.

Nils
