I'm backing up ClearCase VOBs nightly, but because of how they needed to be setup, the VOBs are all on Sun servers and the file systems are mirrored. The backup server is a Sun running Legato 5.1 (Sun Solstice Backup actually).

We used to keep ClearCase VIEW data on Toasters as well, but we recently moved off from there as well for various reasons. Mostly to make like simpler for the ClearCase admins.

My basic procedure (which can be tweaked for your requirements, and I'd be happy to share my backup script with people) does the following:

- locks the VOBs on the filesystem - breaks the mirror in half, one half is now quiet. - unlocks the VOBs, lets users keep stuffing data into CC - mounts the quiet half of the mirror - does the backup from the quiet half - unmount the quiet half - re-syncs the mirror.

This does leave us vulnerable to a single disk failure during the backup window, but it either his the quiet half, which is ok, or it hits the live half. In that case, we only lose a few hours worth of data, which isn't a big deal, since it should still be around in various local VIEWS, etc.
