Another option would be to use VLD on a Windows server. You would use VLD to the filer, and then create an appletalk share on the VLD.

We provide home directories to our mac users via Netatalk. OS X can also connect via CIFS. There is a bug in the latest netatlk with MS Word. You get an error 'too many files open' if you try to save over an exisiting Word doc. Otherwise it's works great for us.
