Another option would be to use VLD on a Windows server. You would use VLD to the filer, and then create an appletalk share on the VLD.

We provide home directories to our mac users via Netatalk.
OS X can also connect via CIFS. There is a bug in the latest netatlk
with MS Word. You get an error 'too many files open' if you try to save
