Hi all, I have a 3170 FAS, with 25 shelves of 1TB disk , 14 per shelf. I use the command storage show disk, and see al 350 disks, yet if I use the command disk show, I see one 242. Can anyone suggest what may be causing the difference in output?
Thanks,
Mark

Do you have unassigned disks? The "disk show" command will only show the disks that are assigned. If there are unassigned disks you would see a note at the bottom of that output stating how many disks are unowned. You can also see those unowned disks by using "disk show -n".
"disk show -v" will show you all of the disks, including those that are not assigned.

It appears not, the disk show –n command brings nothing back.

“unowned” is not the same as “not owned by current controller”. Other disks are owned by some other controller, so they are not shown by “disk show -n”. Any reason you won’t use “disk show -v” as suggested twice already?

Now, carefully look at that list! In a HA environment, there should be only two IDs listed for owners. Of course, only one number for a single controller.
If you have more than the expected number, then that is why they are not showing. Why not post the "disk show -v" to the list so we can see?

Worst case, you may need to head in to maintenance mode and issue the disk reassign command there. Been a while and I do not remember if any version of ONTAP will let you reassign foreign disks without heading to main mode

You can do it in any version, older ones required going into advanced mode and using disk remove_ownership, newer ones just allow you to do “disk assign xx.yy -s unowned -f” or “disk assign xx.yy -s your-sysid -f”. You need “-f” for “force” because disk is not owned by controller where command is executed.

Now, carefully look at that list! In a HA environment, there should be only two IDs listed for owners. Of course, only one number for a single controller.
If you have more than the expected number, then that is why they are not showing. Why not post the "disk show -v" to the list so we can see?

“unowned” is not the same as “not owned by current controller”. Other disks are owned by some other controller, so they are not shown by “disk show -n”. Any reason you won’t use “disk show -v” as suggested twice already?

Do you have unassigned disks? The "disk show" command will only show the disks that are assigned. If there are unassigned disks you would see a note at the bottom of that output stating how many disks are unowned. You can also see those unowned disks by using "disk show -n". "disk show -v" will show you all of the disks, including those that are not assigned.

You can reassign them without maintenance mode in diag privilege level.
disk assign disk_id -s unowned first, then just assign as usual.

And if "disk show" and "disk show -n" still doesn't sum up to 350 you probably have disks assigned to "foreign" controllers in between, which you see with "disk show -v", but you'll have to look very closely at the Owner IDs...

Are these disks that came from another system to be added to this controller as spares? How did 112 disks show up with ownership from another controller (that's not the local or partner in this HA pair)? You can assign disks that are owned by another controller using "disk assign <disk_id> -s unowned -f". This should force the disk unowned since it's owned by another node. You can then take ownership of it.
From the man pages:
To make an owned disk unowned, use the `-s unowned' option. The local node should own this disk. Use *-f* option if the disk is not owned by the local node and may result in data corruption if the current owner of the disk is up.
