As collegues probably pointed out
For the moment shelf remove (hence swap) is NOT supported.
You may add a new shelf to an existing loop and 2 new drives in that shelf and "disk replace"-then-move-the-spares-to-the-new-shelf-and-repeat-until-the-shelf-is-empty-but-the-two-first-slots, but you will not be able to remove this bad-but-now-empty shelf without downtime.
By the way, swapping a shelf can be done quickly if well prepared (5 minutes with 4 hands).

Also this brings me to ask (I think I already know the answer) can you add a shelf to a loop without taking the storage controller down?
Yes, this is possible, as long as the shelf is supported in the already existing loop.
