Due to my inability to find proper Storageworks drive cannisters
for my F330 at an affordable price; anybody ever tried to run Linux
or NetBSD on a F330?
I'd like to do *something* with this box.

We have a lot of data that users need to store on the filer, but may not
need on a daily basis. I'm just trying to find, space saving measures.

Edward,
What are you trying to accomplish? Backup, multiple users, online, etc.
We are both making assumptions about what the end goal is.

My 2 Cents since that's about all it's worth ;)
We use Legato Cluster to Cluster 2 SQL Server machines using the Netapps
Box.
I currently have them in Active/Passive.
It works great when one server fails the other server takes over.
The only caveat w/ the filer is I have to run a RSH script before SQL Server
starts to release the lock from the downed machine.
Fail over typically takes about a minute.

Yes SMB=CIFS and the Linux box solution will work in his environment, but if
he doesn't have any Unix expertise, what sense does it make to add Linux
into his data center? Who would admin the box?
In keeping with the NetApp approach to life, simple is good. Stick with
what you know -- NT. Try winzip. You could probably write some scripts to
largely automate the process.

You could use a Linux box to mount the filer with NFS or SMB. Create a file
that would be used as the compressed (or encrypted) filesystem on the filer.
Use a special mount program to do the compression and to mount the
filesystem.
Then export the filesystem from the Linux box as NFS and/or SMB.

I was told that there is no native tool on the filer that compresses data on
the volumes (like you would on a hard drive)
Is there any 3rd party utils that anyone has encountered that can do this?
Otherwise, I was thinking I would just use winzip as someone from netapp
suggested.
