A couple of quick thoughts: When installing CarrierScan, make sure to select CarrierScan RPC during the install process. If you just accept all of the defaults, it is NOT selected and the AV scan machine won't be able to "see" the filer. And, as has already been mentioned, make sure that the service account is a member of the filer's local Backup Operators group. I have set up CarrierScan and it has been running since April. I have it running on NT 4 not 2000 but I have never put the CSS servers IP address in my Host or Equiv file. What I did was create an account in my domain, placed that account in the Backup Operators group locally. I enabled VSCAN on the Filer then during the install of CSS it asked for the Filer (host) and I entered the Filer. I needed to tweek some setting within CSS for what I wanted but other then that there was no real major changes to files (host, equive or usermap.cfg). Syamantec and NetApp are still working on some open issues I have but overall I think it is a good product. One suggestion for anyone implementing CSS would be to set the following hidden option. vscan options mandatory_scan off If you do not set this and lose the scanning functionality it will lock all the files (doing SCANREPAIR). Everyone coming into the Filer via CIFS (volume, tree, etc) will get a message to the affect that there is a network error when trying to access files. Of course this is an erroneous error which I have also spoken to Symantec and NetApp engineering about. If anyone has any questions I can help with feel free to contact me. Hi Dave, For anonymous ftp access, then you only need one entry in the filers' /etc/passwd file, namely the "ftp::65534:65534::/path:" entry. You should use a Unix qtree, since the files accessed must not have ACL's on them. However, you do not need an NFS license. I have just installed the eval copy of CarrierScan on one of my win2000 servers, it installs successfully but fails to register with the Filer. RE: CIFS and NFS permisions over NFS

Rahul, If you backup a filer over NFS - you will lose CIFS ACLs. If you backup a filer over CIFS - you will NOT lose NFS permissions, since we have a patented (or patent pending, excuse me but I'm not sure) to include NFS permissions in the CIFS traffic itself transparently, and restore it transparently. Thus, if you have a qtree with both filer with NFS permissions AND files with CIFS ACLs you can backup using: 1. NDMP - Since it's filer native format of dump, it backups all special attributes 2. CIFS - Like I explained above 3. NFS - With the notion that you will lose ACL information There are historic threads on this issue by the way. Hello Todd, NetWare can not be run on a filer nor does the filer support NCP. You can, however, integrate the filer into a NetWare environment by configuring the client machines with dual redirectors (NetWare and CIFS). Filer Problem

Hi All, I have a little problem here wherin i can use your help.. 1. Solaris systems in the one of the offices office can NFS mount the NetApp Filer filer1 and work properly. No problems are seen. 2. Irix machines cannot. The can mount exports from filer1 and traverse directory trees, i.e: cd unix/tools/local, etc. Thay can do an ls or 'ls -l' or many directories, but cannot do an 'ls' or 'ls -l' in others. The difference is believed to be the the directories posing problems contain symbolic links. This has not been completely demonstrated. This happens both when the Irix clients are forced to use NFSv2 via the mount option "vers=2" and when they are allowed to default to NFSv3. 3. These same Irix machine can mount a Other offices NetApp filer and have no problems. The symptoms descibed above are not seen. In turn, a other offices Irix system (there are about 500 Irix systems who are active and happy NetApp clients in other office) will see the same same probems when mounting filer1 accross the WAN. 4. The problem between Irix and NetApp centers account the filer1. There are two observed differences betwenn the filer1 and a other filer3, 4.1 Other office is runnig NetApp Release 5.3.5R2P2 while here the filer1 is running NetApp Release 6.0.3 4.2 Other office has "nfs.tcp.enable off" while here filer1 has it set to "nfs.tcp.enable on". 5. We set "nfs.tcp.enable off" in Munich and the Solaris clients hung (they evidently preferred to use TCP over UDP). A reboot of Filer1 and the Solaris systems did not fix them. We turned NFS over TCP back on. 6. We then forced a single Irix NFS mount to use NFSv3 and use TCP via the client mount option "proto=tcp". It worked. 7. Does this symtom of "UDP not working" match a common NetApp misconfiguation? 8. Are there any know issues with UPD under NetApp Release 6.0.3?
