swap broken disk/still broken status

Hello all, I have a F760 running Data Ontap 5.3.6R1. Recently, one of the disks has entered into a broken status. I received a replacement drive and proceeded to swap out. I gave the filer plenty of time to recognize the drive pull. However, when I pulled the drive, I received no notification on console or in the messages file confirming a drive pull/empty slot. Of course placing the new drive in, results in an unchanged broken status. sysconfig -a reports the drive as unloaded. Robert, Per the system admin guide: Host no buffer: The number of times the driver could not allocate a buffer and a packet is dropped. This might happen when the filer is very busy. If the count increases continually, it might indicate that a software component is not returning buffers. I assume you have a call open, since you have changed the NIC. Please work with the support centre on this. Questions that occur to me are: Which ONTAP release are you running? Is the filer running at very high CPU when the network problem occurs? Are you monitoring the filer with MRTG or similar to see patterns of CPU and network usage? NetApp and EMC Comparisons

You dont need spares to do it. You can copy the /etc directory to another volume and set it as root. Farid, Have you considered our own "options cifs.home_dir" feature? This feature enables you to share automatically, in case you already have home directories that are called like the user. Eyal. The argument for the option is a comma-separated list of existing directory paths that are searched in order. If no list is supplied, the current list is displayed. The directories under these paths should have the names of users as their names. When a user connects to the filer using CIFS and there is a directory name that exactly matches the user's name, they will see a share with their name. That is their home directory. Only that user can access the home directory using this share. No other user can see that share name since other users are logged in under a different user name. The default value for this option is the null string. To set this option to the default value (a null string), use a pair of double quotes ("") as the argument. cifs.home_dir_namestyle Specifies how the name portion of the path to a user's home directory is determined. If no argument is supplied, the current value of this option is displayed. Valid values for this option are: a null string, ntname, mapped, or domain. All user home directory paths begin with one of the paths given by the cifs.home_dir option, followed by a slash and the user's name. If this option is set to ntname then a user's Windows login name is used and only downward symlinks (in the directory hierarchy) are followed. If the value of this option is mapped then the user's UNIX name is used. The UNIX name is obtained by mapping the user's Windows login name using the file /etc/usermap.cfg. If this option is set to domain then the user's name includes both the user's domain and Windows login name separated by a slash. The default value for this option is the null string, which acts like ntname with the exception that symlinks are followed in any direction. Our filers vol0 contains user data. We are going to be getting rid of about 80GB of this data. We then want to take some of the disk out of vol0 and put them in another volume. What is the best way to go about this? I have limited filer experience. Thanks for your help. --Debbie

Robert, Can you elaborate on what you mean by dropping? Are you losing connectivity from the client side? If so, what OS are you running? What type of switch are you plugging the Gigabit interface into from the Netapp end? What are the settings on the port on the switch?
