Kerry, If its just a regular NetApp (not a SAN Netapp), you can put in a Fibre Channel card into the NetApp and connect it into a "tape backup" SAN so that you can use the SAN to switch in a tape drive to the filer. Very similar to just attaching a fibre-channel or SCSI tape drive directly to the NetApp. You could then use NDMP to back up the filer to the tape drive(s) over the SAN. This assumes that your TSM backup server supports NDMP. Works great for us. Dan: In my opinion you could test setting Jumbo Frame between them, or try increase the MTU in the Lan cards. I mount the filer on Linux as: mlswna:/ on /backup/mnt/mlswna/rt type nfs (ro,timeo=14,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,nfsvers=3,addr=209.41.211.225) UDP, NFS3, 32K rsize. (Linux TCP NFS support is not quite ready for prime time.) I copied a 100MB file in under 10 seconds. That's around 10Mbytes/second. $ ls -l diskfile -rw-r--r-- 1 34726 34726 104857600 May 9 13:44 diskfile $ time cp diskfile /dev/null 9.85s real 0.00s user 0.31s system $ bs -c 104857600/9.85 10,645,441.6244 I would expect much better than this. The network/switch I'm on has little traffic. The only Gigabit use is the filer and Linux boxes. What other advice can you give me? What other knobs to turn. Hi, I'm interested in setting up a volume that a NFS client can write files to via an NFS mount point and our TSM backup server can backup via a SAN connection. Can I setup a volume that can be accessed by both a NFS client and a SAN client? Netapp tech support says no but when reading the documentation it sounds like I can do it. Has anyone done this? Hi Kerry, The issue here is that the TSM backup server (AIX? NT/Win2K?) won't be able to understand the WAFL filesystem structure. So the most that is theoretically possible is a raw LUN block dump (I don't think TSM supports that anyway). What exactly do you mean by "SAN client"? If by that you mean that you have virtualised disks (LUNs managed by the filer accessed via VLD, iSCSI or FCP) that are stored on your filer then yes, TSM may be able to mount the LUN as it will use a filesystem layout that such as NTFS or JFS that TSM will understand. If however you mean FC block I/O access to a WAFL filesystem - which is what your post implies - then no, and it makes no sense to try. This is where NDMP will provide more value depending on the TSM version you are running. If you can post to toasters or email me directly with more detailed configuration information (TSM version, OS versions, network configuration etc.) then I or someone else here can help with more specific advice. What you probably want to do is give your filer a FC connection to your tape library so TSM can use NDMP to manage a "local" backup to the tape library from the filer. You will need to be careful with zoning on your FC switches. Also, only the Vixel 8100-NAS and some Brocade models of FC switch are officialy supported by NetApp for this configuration. (doesn't mean it won't work with other switches of course). AFAIK TSM 5 and later support this. An alternative is to add a couple of NIC's and provide a dedicated [crossover, or through switch with jumbo frame support] gigabit link between the filer and the TSM server. Set your MTU size to 9014 bytes for this link, and use an IP range that does not exist on your LAN to prevent route table issues. (i.e. if your LAN is say 10.x.y.z use 192.168.y.z for the dedicated link). You should be able to get over 30MB/sec for NDMP transfers over this link, more than enough to keep an AIT3, SDLT or LTO drive busy.
