Quick access to quota information

The landscape: - The company is cable tv providing also Internet services - They intend to use FAS920 in NFS environment (all servers are Linux) - At this very moment they are servicing about 80k users but wanting to be able to service more that 200k - Services for users are to be implemented with UID and GID quotas Requirements: - They need to be able to retrieve quickly information about current quota usage for each specific UID or GID. - The information will be available via: -- Call Center - estimated queries 12 times per minute -- WEB GUI for users - estimated queries 120 times per minute - The quota information should be retrieved within 2 s and should be not older than 30 s - There is not specific requirements regarding method of getting the result (SNMP/RSH/NFS RPC/HTTP are acceptable) We discussed with them SNMPwalk and quota report parsing but they cannot accept it due to high and growing number of users. The most convenient way would be short series of SNMP queries for specific UID / GID. Any suggestions other than "make and parse quota report" are welcome. Best regards, Jacek

FC720 stalling

Okay - first post - be gentle. FC720 old and unloved, has finally started having issues where it ceases to handle CIFS request correctly. The problem manifests as a failure to respond to client requests. Two areas of possible "change" I think likely; Linux client mounting the CIF partitons. However I have no clear handle on what is going wrong. The box just supplies CIFS service to a bunch of W2K webservers using IIS. The problem seems to manifest itself randomly, but does look like it is accumulating over time. Last time it managed 6 days. A reboot or restart of CIFS seems to clear it. When it happens nothing unusual is logged. The box is claiming to handle about 500,000 to 1,000,000 CIFS ops an hour. This doesn't seem to change much when the box fails?! All the status reports look normal. I guess it could be a networking issue, but it only affects the FC720, and is fixed by a reboot. We are in the process of sourcing replacement hardware because is has basically reached the end of it's life. Till recently it "just worked", so no one touched it, and as a result has archaic firmware 2.3_a2. If it was supported and with a future, I'd probably stick a firmware upgrade in straight away and see if this fixes it. But if anyone has any clues where to look, or what might be doing this....

problems with netapp snapshot backups

We recently upgraded from a 960 NT cluster to a 980 cluster. Prior to this, the NT backups consisted of taking a snapshot and then backing this up to via CIFS using Veritas NetBackup. Since moving to the new cluster (and moving to DataOnTap 7.0) , we are unable to do this. FAS 9xx and Intel Pro1000

Hi, I try to insert an Intel Pro1000 "MX" ethernet (cu) card but it is not detected: slot 11: 10/100/1000 Ethernet Controller VI ***** NIC in slot 11: Rev 4-R not supported e11 MAC Address: 00:00:00:00:00:00 (unknown) Device Type: Rev 4-R memory mapped I/O base 0xa0340000, size 0x20000 memory mapped I/O base 0xa0300000, size 0x40000 I/O base 0xefc0, size 0x40 My others FAS9xx seems to use Intel Pro1000 "TX" ethernet (cu) cards. Is there only Intel Pro1000 "TX" ethernet (cu) card that works with FAS9xx ? There is a special Ontap version for thoses ethernet cards or something special to make it working ? -- Auré

George, We have safely deleted the entire contents of this directory on a number of occasions. Our original reason for doing so was because multiple autosupport send failures were causing the data to be accumulated for sending at a later date. The failures were mostly due to email attachment restrictions on our mailrelay. You may like to check your messages log around the time that weekly autosupports are due to go out. It is likely you will see something related to an SMTP failure. UFS (Solaris9/Solaris10) will cut it, but probly isn't the best without tuning, and definately not on Linux. If your using Linux, carefully consider JFS and XFS, both can do what you want but have up and downsides. Do NOT run ReiserFS in production, too many people have been bitten by it. EXT2/3 are just not even contenders, and who wants to pay for VxFS. For your requirements my first attempt (on Linux anyway) would be JFS. And, ZFS, btw, would handle this all nicely, but won't be introduced to Solaris10 untill Update1, sometime in the summer. benr. -----Original Message----- From: owner-toasters(a)mathworks.com on behalf of Maren S. Hi, We have an application where we need to store between 4 to 20 million small files on the on a large drive or a 3 drive raid system. We are finding that file systems like UFS just don't cut it never mind Linux extFS... These file systems can handle what we are trying to do but they tend to slow down as they get full and in some cases we will have to be able to delete millions of files in one go. In this type of configuration unfortunately we can't bundle at netapp as the technical overhead and cost would make the system unfeasable.
