DFM & Debian GNU Linux ?

Hi, I tried to install DFM3.3R1 on a Debian. Firsh the binary tests the validity of /etc/redhat-release so i gave him "Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3". Second i transformed NTAPdfm.i386.rpm to a debian package with alien. The package were succesfully installed but i think the database has not been setup: not database/tables created. When i launch "dfm service start" i get this message: Dec 12 17:49:40 [dfm:ERROR]: Could not get valid status after attempting to start sql server. NOTE: This machine could be configured for failover as a stand by. Sql services will not be started on a stand by machine. If this machine is not configured for failover, the server may already be running. Please use the following system command to verify: "ps -e | grep dbsrv9" I think i have to launch dbsrv8 with thoses options: dbsrv9 -n MonitorDB_leia2 -o "/opt/NTAPdfm/log/sybase.log" -os 10000000 -gd all -gl all -gk all -gp 8192 -ct- -x SharedMemory,tcpip -ud /opt/NTAPdfm/data/monitordb.db but it says me "Could not open/read file: /opt/NTAPdfm/data/monitordb.db". Someone already had this problem ? How can i setup this db, creates the tables it needs and launch it ? -- Auré

Mostly because my budget for this sort of thing is somewhere between zero and zero + 15%. I'm happy to hear about more expensive solutions for future reference though, just to know how other people deal with similar problems. For example, in the last 10 years, we've had to re-ip our entire networks four or five times, couple of times due to acquisitions, others because the network infrastructure team decided things would be better if we re-architected everything. I've also dealt with about 4 or 5 server room moves in the same time period. Ironically, CIFS is never a problem in these scenarios, but NFS is frequently the cause of weeks of trickling-in problem reports and complaints. -- Michael W. As long as you're not sharing the data files between multiple database servers, this should work fine, with the understanding that it "won't be as fast" (greater latency) necessarily as local/block disk. MySQL or PostgreSQL with Filer storage?

We'd like to have our database storage resident on a Filer with NFS. Do any of you have experience or insight into this for MySQL or PostgreSQL? I understand Oracle's happy to work like this but my google searches seem to indicate it's a bad idea to use NFS storage for PostgreSQL or MySQL. NFS does not have the same file system semantics as a local file system, and these inconsistencies can cause data reliability or crash recovery problems. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/multiple-servers.html The warning against sharing a data directory among servers also applies in an NFS environment. Allowing multiple MySQL servers to access a common data directory over NFS is a very bad idea. * The primary problem is that NFS is the speed bottleneck. It is not meant for such use.

user permissions

hello everybody there is a filer fas960 with ontap 7.0.4. I want to create an account that only can monitor volume and snapshot spaces, and in case of volume full, to be able to delete snapshots, and all these only via http. However , if i create an account using useradmin comand with allowed capabilities only login-http-admin, this account, among other things, can perform volume and aggregate deletion, have access to etc/hosts, etc/hosts.equiv, e.t.c. Is somehow possible to restrict this account to specified capabilities? It is possible via telnet, but what about http? thnks in advance John Sfetsoris

I had the exact same problem where the restrictions were perfect using the CLI but had no effect on FilerView. Turned out to be bug id 167183 which is still not fixed. For what it's worth, CIFS probably continued to function for already connected clients because of existing(cached) WAFL credentials and SID cache. If the clients had disconnected, waited 20 minutes and reconnected, I would have expected failure. Domain issues would also explain failure to connect via MMC. NFS shares suddenly giving permission denied

NetApps 740 running 6.4.5. All of a sudden starting to get permission denied errors on some of our NFS shares from our Tru64 Unix servers, not all of them but just some of them. And with some other weirdness where we could go into the top level but then get permission denied when trying to list the contents. The messages file had the following: SamrGetGroupsForUsers: Exception rpc_s_unknown_reject caught. SamrCloseHandle: Exception rpc_s_connection_closed caught. and then had a bunch of the following afterwards: LsaOpenPolicy2: Exception rpc_s_assoc_grp_max_exceeded caught. SamrConnect2: Exception rpc_s_assoc_grp_max_exceeded caught. CIFS was working fine, but I couldn't hit the filer throught the Computer Management console on the MMC. I checked processes and auditing on the Unix side and couldn't tie it down to a specific instance. Though I hated to do it, we ended up rebooting to restore services. I've tried Googling for this in reference to a NetApp box but am coming up empty handed. Lotus Notes

Has anyone installed, implemented, deployed Lotus Notes with a NetApp filer? I know there "SnapManager for Lotus Notes" doesn't exist so how can I do this with the same functionality and SME, and SMBR for that matter. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Hi Brian, Number of NFS daamons used by Data OnTAP on any NetApp filer is, and has always been, exactly zero. Note on all NetApp specsfs submissions (www.spec.org/sfs97r1): "NetApp's embedded operating system processes NFS requests from the network layer without any NFS daemons, and uses non-volatile memory to improve performance." Data OnTAP is not Unix, and is not even "based on" any particular Unix, despite a large number of CLI similarities. The microkernal is developed from the ground up as special-purpose. (i.e. this is not a "stripped down" or modified Linux or FreeBSD product like so many others out there). So you can't directly apply many Unix considerations for performance management to Data OnTAP.
