Snapmirror data not in a qtree

I'm migrating data from an old to a new filer and we have lots of data in qtrees and a significant amount that is at the same directory level, but not in a qtree. Snapmirror serial execution?

Is there a way to make NetApp snapmirror updates run in serial? In other words, if I setup 3 snapmirror relationships, how can I get the first one to run, and then run the second one as soon as the first finishes, and then the third in the same fashion? You can have more that one shelf on the 270, so you might want to buy a cheap second hand shelf from zerowait, and attach that to the existing filer, migrate the data. Not too hard to do. Mac OS AFP support?

I've read TR 3472 "Integrating Mac(r) OS and NetApp Storage<http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3472.pdf>" http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3472.pdf and am aware of Thursby Software's DAVE: http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html, which is of course >$100/seat, depending on number of seats purchased. I would like to know if there is any plans to support AFP natively in Ontap? Has anyone found any other solution to allow for multiplatform (for example PC's and Macs) use of the filer without having to worry about the data fork/resource fork issues? Yes, the macs can talk both CIFS and NFS, the problem is that all files touched by the macs look like this: -rw-r--r-- 1 501 foo 82 Jun 6 16:55 ._NTAP AAPL3472.pdf -rw-r--r-- 1 501 foo 699229 Jun 1 15:45 NTAP AAPL3472.pdf

Hi, We have the following situation: A 3020c with 3 FC shelves (with 144G disks), and 2 SATA shelves. one head has the FC ones, the other ownes the SATA ones. For some reason 2 of the FC shelves are only half-filled and we would like to buy larger FC disks. *) is it possible to intermix different sized disks in one aggregate? (i think so) *) is it possible to intermix different sized disks in one shelf? eg. 7 144G disks and 7 larger disks in one shelf. i dont think so, without loosing the extra space. at least in the past this was not possible with older versions of ontap, if i read the older posts correctly. *) is it possible to move 7 disks from one shelf to the other half-filled shelf without data loss and interruption? then i would have 2 full shelves and one empty shelf and could ad the new disks to that empty shelf (and the same aggregate). yours josef -- MfG Josef Radinger it-services Medizinische Universitaet Innsbruck

Using Subinacl for CIFS ACL changes

Hi, We are attempting to make alterations to our file and directory ACLs using the microsoft utility Subinacl.exe. All attempts to use this utility under an account which has anything less than Administrative status on the Filer fail. For example running the following command subinacl /subdirectories \\sharesfiler\adm$ <file://sharesfiler/adm$> /display - with an account which has Power User & Backup Operator group membership on the Filer returns an error message - CreateFile Error : 1314 A required privilege is not held by the client. The account the command is being run under has both Full Control on the share and the ACL. If we use other MS utilities to perform the same function such as cacls, xcalcs or the windows GUI we can view and alter all ACLs without the need to grant the account Administative status. This implies that the access permissions are sufficient and therefore there is something subinacl is doing that is different to other tools designed for the same purpose. Upgrading the account priveleges to Administrator overcomes this problem but this is not an option except in our test environment. This behaviour is consistant on Ontap 6.5.7, 7.0.5, 7.0.6 and 7.2.2 implying that its not a release bug. Has anyone else come across this behaviour before or have any idea what subinacl is doing that the other tools do not? Your assistance will be appreciated. rgds, Oisin

A-SIS (NetApp De-Duplication)

Hello *, we are in the process of consolidating several NetApp filers and NearStore systems onto a single FAS30x0HA system. The system's main function is to serve primary data (part from FCAL disks, part from SATA disks), it's secondary function is to act as the NearStore system for a second site, storing the copy of the other site's data on SATA disks. Now we would like to try A-SIS to reduce the required physical storage. It looks as if in order to add A-SIS (a_sis license), I also need to install the NearStore license. Now my concern is, that by giving the system a NearStore personality I might impact the system's primary role - serving primary storage data to users. Has anyone experience with how a system changes when the NearStore licenses is enabled? Any negative impact for serving data to users? Is the NearStore personality activated by installing the nearstore license, or could we install the nearstore and a_sis license, but keep the nearstore personality deactivated? For data that we volume SnapMirror, would we need an A-SIS license on both sides - source and target system? Will the volume SnapMirror transfer less data (assuming that A-SIS de-dupe of data saved some of the required data blocks)? yes?!) Any other experience (good or bad) or concerns when using A-SIS? Any reason to not use it on all (home directory type data) volumes? Any limitation encountered? Any experience how much savings can be achieved (e.g. for home directories volumes, volume storing tons of application software packages)? Cheers --pwo -- Peter W. Hi Roger, Also a posible setup: the source is on a regular FAS system without nearstore personality and asis, but for DR you use qtree snapmirror to a nearstore. Your can turn on asis only on the destination. . You don't save space on the source, but you save a lot on the destination site.
