Snapshot delete

Hi Toasters List, we create manually snapshots to make backups if we deploy new software releases. Now I want to delete automatically all snapshots older than 6 hours, because of special restrictions. I read the manual about snap autodelete but I cant find an option. Has anyone experience in those things? Greetings Steffen

Hi, we have a directory service which is our AD, but only for windows. But maybe this is not enough.... Do we need a special one for the unix side, too?? Every CIFS SID must map to some UNIX UID. If you look at your password file, you probably have at least the "pcuser" in there, which may even be 65534. Either install a name service, or create a password file: username::UID:GID::: That is all you need unless you want to get fancy with FTP or something. You may need to terminate current CIFS sessions to force them to re-authenticate properly. HiDon't know if you have seen http://www.netapp.com/library/tr/3428.pdf. This talks a bit more about ESX and Netapp together.Reading this description it sounds like there may be old snapshots and/or space reservations at play here. Basically the question becomes whether we can force ESX to actually reuse any of the [netapp in use] - [real use according to ESX] = 130 GB of space. Probably we need to clean up and start over with a new clean LUN, which we could then either hard provision and forget about thin provisioning altogether, because in our scenario it is no help. A broader question becomes were we went wrong? Our situation seems to suggest that we waste a whole lot of disk space - which VMware wont reuse on its own, and which NetApp can't touch (how would it know it was now freed up space) In that sense thin provisioning is just a space waster in an environment with VMDK's being destroyed and recreated from scratch. Of course we could always go flexcloning... but that would force netapp world on a whole lot of admins. Hi, It's obvious that a multitier NetApp solution is the best way to go ;-) But, an alternative would be using NDMP, and NetBackup is in that sense a very good choice. This way you can dump the snapshots on tape. In terms of tape connectivity you have different option: direct into your NetApp, into a fabric or over ip. NetApp and NetBackup

Hi Everyone, We have not long had our FAS3020's, and have just purchased NetBackup to start putting snapshots to tape. NBU was chosen because of its Advanced Client's NetApp integration (and because our NetApp reps recommended it!). We're struggling to get the whole thing talking, and the Symantec consultants on site are struggling as well. Has anyone here implemented a similar configuration before, and would be able to let on any tips/traps/hints picked up along the way??? Or anyone know of any online resources that might help? (NOW doco focuses on Oracle implementations using NetBackup). A bit of background would help I guess - We're running clustered 3020C's, with about a dozen hosts all attached via iSCSI. We have a mix of Exchange 2007, SQL 2005 (both currently using SnapManager to schedule snapshots), plus some standalone infrastructure servers (using snapdrive and the cli the schedule snapshots). We're talking OnTAP 7.2.2, and NetBackup 6.0 MP4. Let me know if there is other info I should include. Cheers everyone! I have made an entry in the usermap.cfg like this Domain\jochen.willeke == utest In filers local passwd utest has UID 1234 (only for a test). Mapping checked with wcc seems to work well, but when i create a folder from the windows side with my user jochen.willeke and then check with "ls -n" from a unix host, it shows me the UID and group ID from nobody (65534). VMware ESX and NFS Performance issues at mount-time (was RE: NetApp Thin Provisioning and VMware ES

Hi JackNo, this is not normal.My first suspicion would be network connectivity problems, as NFS is quite sensitive to under/bad- performing networks.When tried mounting the export from another box, was the other box in the same subnet as your ESX machine?The other thing to of course check out is if you have configured virtual switches and virtual network architecture on the ESX machine.Depending on your situation (whether you are on-site and which bit of the network are mission critical and so on) I would first of all try putting a laptop or another box on the same place as the ESX server originally was, give it the same IP address and use a non-virtualised Linux/Un*x and see if you are able to mount the export successfully. Lessons Learned - Upgrade to 7.2.2 (i2p)

While the subject is 'i2p', this isn't an email telling you about the mapping that causes some high utilization, rather it is about the aftermath of the i2p mapping process. I recently performed an upgrade of some of our nearstore systems (used for email compliance, among other things), and was expecting a pretty serious utilization curve while the i2p mapping was performed as part of the upgrade (we upgraded from 7.0.6, not 7.1.X). This came and passed with high utilization of CPU and DISK, but no real issues. However, the i2p mapping apparently keeps the inode-2-path map for every file\inode in the metadata - we have volumes with snaplocked data in the terabytes, the most heavily utilized of which is about 110million files (the 2nd highest utilized is about 82million). As this data has been marked as 'archive' in the Enterprise Vault system, it isn't being written to anymore, so I'm not terribly concerned with the snapmirror update taking a while - however, it is throttled down pretty low as our WAN is not yet up to snuff (coming later this year). Apparently, because i2p touches each inode, we have about 110million*4KB to transfer (~420GB) for the 'update' to our 4.2TB volume. Likewise, the 3.2TB volume with 82million files had about 313GB to transfer. If you have volumes with a significant amount of files, be aware that the snapmirror update after the i2p process completes post-7.2.2 upgrade (or 7.1.1 even, I suppose) will be fairly significant in size. Hope this helps some of you out there so that you are not caught unaware. 'evening Glenn
