CIFS volume deduplication

Hi everyone, We have a NetApp Filer 3040 running 7.2.6.1. We have configured Dedupe on a few volumes with ESX VM's and have saved about 15-25% disk space. Last week, we ran it on our CIFS Volume (Homedir, Shared Drives, etc), which is 950Gigs, but we only saved about 700 megs. These are the following commands we used to start the deduplication... sis on VOL sis start -s VOL It took about 8 hours to scan the volume. Afterwards, "df -s" showed that it saved 0%. Netapp suggested that I wait for the old snapshots to delete, but it still didn't help. Does anyone have any ideas about this ? User based Quotas - Why don't they show up correctly when mapped?

More fun with user based quotas. When a user has a mapped CIFS share to their home drive the size of the entire volume shows up when they map the drive. I thought user quotas used to just show the "quotaed" space for that user. I.E. I have a 11TB volume. I create a user quota of 500MB and apply it to a user (say xyz99). When XYZ99's home share is mapped they see 11TB available to them, not 500MB. A tree based quota with a hard limit works just fine in showing only 500MB available. I've worked with Netapp support and did get an obscure bug (88541 <http://now.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/bol?Type=Detail&Display=88541> ) that has no information and a reply that there isn't much information on this issue. (Maybe the functionality just isn't there? I could swear we used to have that function.) Does anyone use user quotas and have this same problem? Are there better ways to do user home share type CIFS shares? Thanks lock p.s. Within it is one called na_chmod.exe I have a script that I run at 3am every day that uses this to change the ownership of each folder based on the users' login name. We have our user shares saved as filername:/vol/users/username and shared as \\filername\users. They are using NTFS security style and no QTrees. Authenticated Users has List on the first level subfolders with Administrators, System, and Creator Owner having Full Control of everything. The script is something like (I'm at home and doing this off the top of my head): for /d %f in (\\filername\users\*.*) do na_ntfschown /r domain\%f The exact syntax may be off a bit, but you get the idea. Upgrade to the P2 version and your issue Patrick> should be resolved Thanks for the info, though in my case I'm not sure if that's completely the issue, since it looks like the NDMP session(s) tend to go away properly, but the backup sessions don't terminate properly, which leads to NDMP failures when they can't allocate new backup sessions. In any case, I'll login to NOW and see what I can find in terms of the changes between 7.2.6.1 and 7.2.6.1P2 that relate to NDMP. Thanks! John

Hi all, Is anyone else seeing hanging backup sessions under 7.2.6.1 when doing NDMP backups to a directly attached FC LTO4 tape drives, using CommVault 7.0.0 Update 76 Version #### software? cant delete a snapshot

we have a snapshot of a lun taken by snapmanager v6.x no clones however snapshot states as busy,lun have a case open with netapp, but am getting nowhere. anybody have any clues ?

disable root account

hello this is a fas250 masine with 7.2.4 ontap installed We need to disable root access to storage from cmd and http as well, or prevent login from this account. Mounting VMware Volume Snapshot on Windows Host

I have a windows 2003 server with Snapdrive 4.2.1 and I was wondering how I can mount a snapshot of a volume that holds vmware luns. Is this possible? I was told that this is feasible with VCB framework installed; however, I currently receive an error: "unable to connect disk. Failure in connecting to the virtual disk. Error: A timeout of 600 secs elapsed while waiting for the volume arrival notification from the operating system". I have verified that I can mount exchange volume snapshots for SMBR recovery on this machine. Also, what are others here doing for image level backups of their VM's? Are there better/cheaper alternatives to VCB and SMVI? How is SMVI working out for those of you out there using it? Thanks.

Strange data loss on a Netapp NFS volume

Hi Tosters, Has any one ever encountered a strange data loss on a Netapp NFS volume? Last Sunday there was an incident Production of my customer was down as 2 Oracle database was gone form the volume. The Netapp was not serving the database to the application server. There should never be a Full volume or Full aggr, but things happen we all know Mr. Murphy law. The volume did reach maximum size at some point, and there was a hanging snapmirror. Snapdrive problem

Hi Toasters Last week we attempted to extend a disk - a lun mounted in windows 2003 server using snapdrive (ver 6.0.1) - something we do fairly often. The event viewer on the server reported: Failed to expand the LUN by 51200 MB. Failure in expanding NTFS file system on the disk. LUN Name = bondv8_database.lun Storage Path = /vol/vol_bondv8/ Protocol Type = LUN Storage System Name = RULWAFAS01 Error code : The parameter is incorrect. However, the filer actually did expand the lun, and from the filer everything looked kosher. Windows however, did not reflect the change. We disconnected/reconnected etc and it wouldn't change. Netapp told us to either a) rewrite the MBR on the disk manually using a windows support tool (beyond our expertise and a bit scary) or b) copy all the data off, destroy the volume, recreate, and copy back. We did (b) and the copying of the data to a new volume took 7 hours, and once we destroyed/recreated a new volume, the copy back took 2 hours. This was all over the Fibre channel, and the speed difference I cant account for, I can expand the new lun/volume using snapdrive with no problems now, but have to admit my confidence in snapdrive is shaken. It's taken all weekend to sort this out (following an aborted copy on saturday) and am worried that such a fundamental facility of the SAN is being compromised by the Snapdrive software. Has anyone got any ideas as to why windows would do this? Its not happened before, and its a stable server, all upto date.
