serial port

if the serial port on an F330 seems to be "wedged", ie seems to be operating at the wrong speed, spitting back junk characters, and the like, is there any way to clear it without resetting the toaster? i have high confidence in the terminal being ok as it's on a serial switch between my two F330s, and the other one seems fine. i have tried the "busted" toaster on all three other ports on the serial switch, so i don't think the problem is there, either. just curious. tom yates unix chap

F520 slots?

I'm looking for info about how many expansion slots a F520 system has -- if that's at www.netapp.com then I'm overlooking it. We're looking at a system with 64, maybe 128MB RAM 2MB NVRAM 3 disk shelves 1 network card and I'm trying to find out how much room for future SCSI or networking cards that would leave.

CIFS and HTTP performance

I have a couple of questions regarding CIFS and HTTP performance on NAC filers. Appreciate any answers regarding these. In reviewing the CIFs performance white paper on the NAC website (http://www.netapp.com/technology/level3/3015.html), I'm unclear on what type of NetBench test is being run. Specifically, I'm not sure if the paper describes NetBench Disk Mix or Random Read/Write tests. I'd thought that the graphs pertained to the Disk Mix test but block size variation test (section 3.1 in above paper) made me think that perhaps Random Read/Write test was being described (Disk Mix does not allow the I/O block size to be varied? If the Read/Write test is being used, I would be very interested in knowing the file sizes that are being used in these tests. Second, I'm wondering if there is any info or experiences regarding how many http op/s can a Netapp Web filer support? Thanks! Aamer a.latif(a)ieee.org

problems with F220 and INN on BSD/OS 3.0 (NFS v3 over TCP)

Hi. I am new to the list. Is anyone else having problems with INN's fastrm not actually deleting all files it intended to delete when used on BSD/OS 3.0 with an F220? /bin/rm seems to work fine and in looking at the code the major difference seems to be that /bin/rm stat()'s each file before unlink()ing whereas fastrm just unlink()s. I am working up a version of fastrm that always stat()s first to see if that makes a difference. Any similar experiences? Chris

one of my F330s in back in write hell: during large chunks of the working day, the "disk write" statistic is non-zero (extremely non-zero) most of the time. given that i'm maxed out on NVRAM (8Mb), is there anything i can do to tune things? NFS v3 tcp brokenness....

Tonight my filer stopped serving NFS over its FDDI interface. Twice. I called NAC support, got a call back, they had me take the interface down and back up. That fixed it temporarily. It was then reccomended that I disable the tcp extension (of course, it involves some work on the client side as well; joy). I did it and now it seems to be happier. My beef with NAC is that the tech guy said that there had been many problems like this, alot of open tickets in the support queue and that the next release of the OS would have the tcp option disabled (as the default; not removed). Why in the world has NAC not sent out an advisory about this? If it has been causing so many problems, the least they could have done is let us know that it could happen. Since this is a new filer (f540, 256MB read cache, 8MB nvram, 100GB, 2x100bT, 1 fddi), the problem only affected some setup stuff I was doing. The problem seems worse with fddi than with ethernet connections (my mounts that occured over ethernet were fine while the fddi ones were not). Anybody from the peanut gallery? Alexei

We are about to loan a toaster to see how well it performs in our environment (mixed Sun/Auspex/pc, NFS/SMB, ATM(Fore)/Ethernet). Does anyone have any tips about toaster weaknesses that we should try?
