midnight disk failure

Does something about the timing of this disk failure strike anyone as odd or is it just me? I'm curious to know whether some checks only done once an hour, once a day, or if something else is at play. This happened on an 18 day old F630/FiberChannel running 5.0.1D1. remove snapshot, or what?

Hi there guys. I'm not the regular NetApp tech around here, so I have a quick weekend maintenance question. Our filer had about -60MB (less than zero) free when I last checked it. We're deleting plenty of space now, but it's of course moving the deleted data to the snapshot storage. Is it proper to delete the snapshot storage manually? Or will the filer give it up in favor of the normal NFS export? We have, for example, some '.snapshot' directories that contain redundant data. Is 'rm -rf' proper there, or what? Thanks a lot.

Ok never mind. I see that the 'snap' command does that. I removed the oldest snapshot and we had 450Mb free after a few mins. Thanks anyway! :)

ndmpcopy?

I need to move about 56GB of data from one F520 to another. Does anyone have experience using ndmpcopy for that? It looks like it might fit the bill, but I'd be interested in hearing of any good-bad-indifferent experiences with it, and particularly what rate it can transfer data from one filer to another.

Renaming quota trees

Is this possible? We tried to restore to an alternate filer, and, as expected, it did not work. We were able to restore to an alternate location on the same filer. Now we are wondering if we can load a specific tape into the drive, go to the specific segment and try a manual restore. Has anyone else tried this? Is there any chance that some header can be added into the mail sent out on the toaster's list to make it easier to identify by a mail handler. Currently I have to depend on the envelope sender, which is not ideal but normally works, but why is the sender <fubar(a)mathworks.com>, and why did it suddenly change from <madhatta(a)mathworks.com>?
