Ummm, as far as the manual was concerned /vol/vol0/home should be accessible over the automounter as /home, likewise anything else on vol0. From what I read (which may be completely incorrect ;) only for volumes other than vol0 are you required to use the /vol/vol# syntax. I've set up a number of filer here and I'm referencing all homes and projects from /vol/vol0/dirname as filer:/dirname successfully. Soooo, looking at one of my filers... rsync and stale nfs file handles

Hey folks. I have run into a problem I had not seen before and need some other eyeballs to look at it. We have some staging servers out in our field offices with local disk. The folks at these offices are editing content throughout the day. At intervals throughout the day, the content from the staging servers gets pushed to our hosting facility via rsync. The problem we are seeing is that apache is getting quite a few " reason: stat: Stale NFS file handle (errno = 151)" errors. We are using Solaris 2.5.1 servers and mount the filer with v3 (udp). We invoke rsync with: -a -b --delete -e $SSH $local $remote Is there a way for us to get around the client side caching of file handles? Or is there a different problem? Has anyone done something like this before? Help? Thanks. Alex

Tape drives

NetApp network aliasing / gigabit redundancy

We're considering replacing the fast ethernet (some single cards, mostly quad cards) on all of our multi-homed NetApps with a single gigabit ethernet interface. We think it's a good idea, except for the pain associated with ending use of old IP numbers for deprecated interfaces. Does anyone have experience with aliasing interfaces to allow use of ex-interfaces on NFS servers, especially on a NetApp? Also, since I'm nervous about exercising rarely-used code paths on these things, I'd like to hear about anyone's experiences with address aliasing on NetApps in general. Finally, can anyone tell me about network redundancy on NetApps hooked up with gigabit card(s)? We're using 3Com switches. Dan

How to remove good drive from Raid volume?

After configuring a new 520 with 12 data drives, 1 parity, and 1 hot spare, it was decided that one of the data drives should be reconfigured as a hot (or cold) spare. There's no data on the machine yet, so re-initialize is an option, I just can't find where the instructions are in the manuals or on the NOW web site. I don't want to 'disk fail' it unless there's a way to restore its status as a good drive. Any suggestions and/or solutions would be GREATLY appreciated! Go ahead and re-initialize and then re-setup the filer. Boot from the floppy disk to do this. Bruce

Fixed: NFS processes using mount point question...

Hi, We found out that if you specify the hostname:/mountpoint with fuser -k you can kill off dead/hung process. We were hitting the problem due to typing fuser -k /localmountpoint. Thanks anyway! Julie

CIFS and NT ACLs experiences

Hi All, A word of warning - OnTap 5.1 with its full NT ACLs has some problems. From bitter and ongoing experience I wouldn't advise using it on a production filer. If you are running this I'd advise getting onto netapp to get the latest bug fixes. I have been advised to run whack. Still haven't dared switch quotas back on. I used to think that those giving off about the quality of netapp SW were being a bit harsh, but now I'm not so sure. I know I'm running an early release, but never again. The troops will just have to wait for the new fetures. NFS processes using mount point question...

Hi, We are using two NetApp F630's which replicate each other so that in the event of failure of one, the clients using that one can be switched over. We are using HP clients so would like to run fuser -ck to kill the processes hanging on the dead mount points. Unfortunately this does not work since fuser first attempts to stat the mount point and then seems to hang indefinately. We can kill the processes manually, but putting the list of "dead" processes together is going to be difficult without fuser. We thought of running fuser at regular points throughout the day while both servers are available and using this list of processes, but this is not a guaranteed way of capturing everything. Does anyone have any ideas ? Does lsof behave better on hung nfs mount points ? Many thanks Julie Stephen Vodafone Ltd. UK.
