Two reasons.. One was wrong. The first reason, is I was told by sales people from software companies that the filer cannot control the changer. So I would need to hook up a server to do that. The second reason may also be wrong. I just bought a big AIT changer that has 4 drives. I was going to get a 5th drive to backup some of our local machines. No, you won't have to issue the download command becuase you are simply putting an "extra" set of files on those "vol1" disks. You are not actually upgrading the OS of the filer that those disks are attached. Brian, The F/W/D SCSI connector on the back of the your F760 is high voltage, but I'm curious why you need to connect a dedicated machine to the media changer. I'f you're not using an NDMP compliant backup package, you might like to take a look at the NDMP tools on NOW. Brian, It's not so much the NetApp and the Linux box that need to be compatible - the filer will connect to the tape drive *only*, and the Linux box to the media changer *only* - they are separate busses (of course, it's likely that the library will have the same (HVD or LVD) interface for both the library and the drive). Since the filer's SCSI port is fast/wide/diff HVD, then the tape drive will need to have the same. If you use NDMP-compliant backup software, then you can connect the media changer as well as the tape drive directly to the NetApp filer. Is the scsi connecter on the back of a 760 LVD or HVD? I am trying to hook a tape drive up and need to get a controller for a Linux box that will talk the same language as my netapps. I need this controller to control the media changer of the jukebox. --Brian

Just as an update: -recall that our current testing has removed any Netbackup or robotics from the picture. It's just a Netapp, a SCSI card, and a DLT drive. :) -I'm indeed certain that we're talking about 100% differential SCSI. -I thought I found the problem when I realized that the DLT drive had a SCSI ID of 1. So I set it to 0, rebooted the filer, power cycled the DLT, and saw no difference :( -I have heard from lots of people who aren't having any problems connecting an F760 to a DLT 7k in an STK 9740, so I know it's not some sort of inherent STK-NetApp incompatibility. But I'm reduced, at this point, to finding any possible difference between the SUN drive (that worked) and the STK drive (that doesn't work) - jumpers, firmware, etc. Thanks for the assistance so far, folks. rob __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If vol1 on filerA is marked as "root" (use 'vol status' to determine this), then you can remove that shelf from filerA and put it on filerB. FilerB will boot this easily. Once that volume is on filerB, you can do a 'vol rename vol1 vol0' to rename the volume. Of course, this will change what your /etc/exports file will look like. If vol1 is not marked as the root volume, you can still move the disks, but you'll need to boot off floppys and chose the 5 option and issue a 'vol options vol1 root' command. I have a populated shelf of disks (one RAID group, one filesystem, one full shelf of 7 disks) that is vol1 on Filer A. I want to put it on Filer B, which currently has no disk. Can I do this without wiping the data on those disks, which I need? How do I get the boot and system files on it without destroying the existing volume and filesystem? Until next time... two jukeboxes on one machine

Hey all, got another possiably off topic question... In looking for new backup software, we are having to pay quite a premium for having two jukeboxes hanging off of different machines. I was wondering if anyone knows if a Sparc 20 can handle two DLT 8000 jukeboxes hanging off it doing backups, or if I'd need a better machine?
