Well, the nearest comparable component in the Suns etc. I think you're talking about would be the back-planes or centre-planes, and they take a very long time to replace indeed. If you're talking about more NetApp-scale machines like E420R's, rather than Exy00's, I think you'll find the motherboard's are real pains requiring a second torque-adjusted screwdriver (you need one for the CPU modules). Suns etc. are very variable IMHO - ever tried to put a heatsink back on one of the ASICS or UltraSPARC modules on an Exy00 CPU-board when you catch it accidently sliding it into the chassis? Not easy to do, and often a cause for further FRU shipments. SGI's are tricky to pull apart in the field too, but they, at least, were intending to lever off the node/module design. Starfires, IBM S80's and other big boxes, well sometimes they can be serviced online, sometimes they need a day's downtime. A really rapid mobo swap can be accomplished (in a NetApp, Netra, etc.) by doing a full head-swap if it's *that* important to you. I have to say that compared to the old 1400's the F540, F630 etc. generation was a substantial improvement in Serviceability, and it looked like the designers had spent some time as field engineers taking notes about how things can be done. > But otherwise, sounds like fun ;) Aye. Hi Lance, If you have 700 series machines, there's a slot for labling below the LCD, accessible from behind (ie. you have to pull the front panel off to access it.) Just make sure the sharp objects are all safely put away. I guess it's a case of put too many propeller heads in one room, and you can achive critical mass from all the expelled air. When do you say enough is enough already? Well I've said it, is there a second? Or does this continue thru the weekend? I've got my asbestos undies on for any of you so inclined flameaholics. fubar, I'm not sure which of us is more confused, as I didn't email anything about Power Tools! However, to reword my post script, when I chose "reply to all" in order to have mathworks included in the receipients, I accidentally removed mathworks rather than scw, thus accomplishing the same thing as a "reply to sender". feel better now fubar? The only tools you are allowed are a grounding strap and a Leatherman. *All* screws *inside* the box are unsecured and secured in the timed interval. <hint,hint> The ones inside your head should definitely be loose, all the time. No connections outside the box, redundant or otherwise, can be broken until the console port shows an "ok" prompt after a proper shutdown. Depending on what pieces are being changed, you don't want to loose any data potentially on the NVRAM card! Hmmm...if these Olympics get international recognition, there are going to have to be classes of events. It's no fair to people who have multiple FCAL cards, with cluster failover cards, gig and quad ethernets cards, etc. There can be a 3 PCI card event, etc. ;) First prize?
