Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? SMVI 2.0 problem

ok, scratching my head here... I just upgraded the new SMVI 2.0 with file level restore.. HURAYY.. Its only been a year, but I guess you cant rush perfection. I was previously running 1.2 and have the typical wait time errors, but for the most part is successful. Specs: ESX vshpere 4.0 (non 4i flavor) SMIV 2.0 (installed on VMWare VIC physical server) 6040's DOT 7.3.11 FC HP DL380s G5(for now) problem: When I try and do a single file restore via self service option, (to and from the same VM guest), I go to select the vm in the restore agent from the guest OS, I press OK. Then I get an error: Failed to retrieve backupList fro the source guest. And I only have an OK button. i have tried from multiple guest os'es. Same result. I looked in the log, and this is just before the popup I get: at RestoreAgentWCFSvc.RestoreAgent.GetBackupsAndDisks(GuestIdentifier guest, List`1& backupRootedHierarchy, List`1& diskRootedHierarchy, Exception& exFromHyperVisor) then the error in the log.. 11/23/2009 01:31:48:154 (PID:01684 ,TID:00006): Failed to retrieve backupList for the source guest Any help is appreciated.. -- View this message in context: http://old.nabble.com/SMVI-2.0-problem-tp26486178p26486178.html Sent from the Network Appliance - Toasters mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Some disks showing as 0.0GB 0B/sect (Found in scan)

Hi, I am in the final stages of decommissioning a pair of FAS3020 filers and have been running the disk sanitize commands to erase all our data before the systems go back to NetApp (trade in deal as part of the purchase of a FAS3140) . They are no longer on support so I can't open a case with NetApp. During the execution of the disk sanitize command to clear the final few discs it hung at 9% completed, and would not proceed beyond that. All activity on those specific disks had ceased. If I run a sysconfig -a they now report as 0.0GB 0B/sect (Found in scan) I have tried the privileged command disk unfail -s <diskname> (which I have used to clear BAD_LABEL faults) but the system now reports the disks as not being found. A reboot has made no difference. The only item I could find in the NetApp KB was around software based disc ownership, but we do not have software ownership enabled on the disks/filers. Whilst I could just ship it back to NetApp as it is, I would like to get the discs back online to complete the disk sanitization process. I have tried moving the failed disks to another shelf, but the fail remains so it is the disks and not the shelf. Any ideas ? The low-side of the Power Supply is the same for both high-side voltages. So, assuming you're plugging into a 208V power source on the "new" Power Supplies, it should work fine. vif create on the fly

I am going to create a vif using two interfaces (e0a and e0c). The IP address of e0a is going to be the IP for the vif, e0c is not in use. I was hoping to do this without shutting down, and disrupt connections on that IP for just a few seconds. Do I need to "ifconfig down" e0a before running "vif create" ? For speed and accuracy, I will put the commands in a file beforehand and run it with "source". The switch is configured, but I have to move the cables to the configured ports. Should I do this before running "vif create" ? This is a clustered pair, so I will be doing this on both filers. Any clustering issues to worry about? Should I "cf disable" before and "cf enable" after to avoid any unwanted fail overs? I would appreciate any suggestions on how best to do this. Every engineering discipline will be different...and that will vary on compliance and backup procedures in place..etc..etc.. Hi all, IHAC who is looking for stats which could point to industry standards mentioning the head counts (engineers) required per amount of storage (PB,TB). Any links with such studies would be great. Regards, Babar Haq

SMVI Experiances

Hi all, Now our controller upgrade woes have been sorted I can start to play with the new stuff on our 2050. One of those is SMVI. Unfortunately as we're not on vSphere (and our ESX hosts aren't up to 3.5 update 4) we'll be sticking with v 1.2 of SMVI until we upgrade our ESX infrastructure to v4. Anyone out there willing to share their experiances with SMVI ? It looks fairly simple to configure and get going but just as I was about to schedule a few backup jobs I thought I'd trawl the net to find out if there are any 'gotchas'. For example we use iSCSI - will the VM grind to a halt (ie queisce) while the Volume is snapped (ie is there a performance hit) or is this a momentary operation (ie safe to do during the day) ? I have seen the note about snapping a VM with iSCSI attached LUN's - I can live with that (not sure about the DBA's . . .). For Prod we tend to put a 300Gb VMFS lun in a 500Gb flexvol - rate of change is generally pretty minimal for the app servers (generally w2k3 or w2k8 servers from templates). Is this a workable ratio or do I need to allocate more space (I'm looking at just a once a day snap with a 1 or 2 day retention) ? Thanks in advance, Raj.

Determining the current 'snapmirror throttle' value?

Guys, Does anyone know how to determine what the current setting of 'snapmirror throttle N destination' actually is? I've tried looking at the output of: snapmirror status -l snapmirror throttle We're looking to dynamically throttle and un-throttle connections, and it would be nice to confirm what the actual setting is without have to guess and just set the value blindly. We're running 7.2.6.1 and moving to 7.3.1.1 soon, or something newer.
