Netapp and VMware... It's all so confusing!

So, say for example, I want to virtualize an Exchange server. Lets also say that I want to manage it via Snapdrive and SME. Lets also say, just for the heck of it, that I want both the new front-engined Acura NSX as well as the Porsche RC3. The cars aside, I would have to run iSCSI from within the VM, install and use Snapdrive from within the VM to provision LUNs, install Exchange and then use SME? It seems kind of silly to use iSCSI from within a VM if the ESX box were fiber attached to the Filer, just to be able to use Snapdrive and SME, no? I would love to be able to use the features of SD and SME within a completely virtual environment and am wondering what some real world implementations other VMware/Netapp customers are running. Do you run storage for the databases and logs in VMDK's and manage snapshots and backups from a VMware virtual machine perspective or do you manage them as iSCSI LUNs and use SD and SME? SnapDrive makes an API call to expand the NTFS partition and file system within it. (It grows the LUN first.) This can be done with Exchange running. We demo this all the time. Happy holidays!! autosupport stops functioning

anyone else have this happen? suddenly one of our filers stops generating autosupport messages. both autosupport.enable and autosupport.support.enable are on. if i generate a test email with the autosupport.doit option nothing happens. not even a failed message, the console just sits there as if i never generated one. needless to say neither netapp or our email server gets anything from this filer and nothing hits the console about generating any autosupport emails.

Authentication Error

Hi, I am interested in accessing /vol/vol0 from my windows machine and from Linux Machine too. When I try to connect it the following error message appeared "The account is not authorized to log in from this station". On Linux machine I can mount /vol/vol0, but it does allow me to go into mounted directory. My machine is also an administration host of NetApp. Please help. Netapp and VMware ESX 3.5

Hello all, Having decided to upgrade our VMware ESX servers to 3.5 from 3.0.2, we have come across a strange problem. On each ESX server we have 3 VSwitches, 2 of them each contain a service console port and VMkernel port. One of Vswitches we have been using for Iscsi in ESX 3.0.2 without any problems. (The first VMkernel port is enabled for Vmotion and is routable) Once we upgraded to 3.5 we have noticed that the filer now shows 2 sessions from the esx host, one from each of the VMkernel ports, however one of the paths is routed and one of the paths is switched. On the ESX host we see each LUN twice, with different paths but with the same canonical path. Does anyone know how to restrict what targets are being sent by the filer based on the interface ? We cannot disable Iscsi on any of the interfaces on the filer. Or does anyone have any other bright ideas ? R200 aggregate reallocation

Hi, I had to add just 2 disk to an existing aggregate. I suspect those disks will end up being a performance bottleneck, so I tried to start reallocation of the aggregate: toaster> reallocate start -A aggr0 Unable to start reallocation scan on 'aggr0': Aggregate created on older version of ONTAP What's the best way to proceed? -- Eino Tuominen

I'm off network so I can't research this, but want to ensure that I can expand a LUN for Exchange on the fly, no downtime. Plan to use SnapDrive 5.0. Volume is already large enough in capacity. Hello Toasters one 250gb disk has inserted to 500gb disk aggregate by mistake Is there a way to fix this issue ? VFM Migration Edition -

IHAC who purchased VFM Migration Edition to migrate file services from Windows servers to NetApp filer. And the software seems to be quite complicated. Is there any demo script how to demonstrate to the customer the way it operates (to run live demo on simulator, not flash or powerpoint presentation)? I am looking for complete recipe because due to shortage of time I am not able read all the manuals. Any hints will be also appreciated!
