from the man pages autosupport.local.nht_data.enable Enables/disables the NetApp Health Trigger (NHT) data autosupport to be sent to the recipients listed in autosupport.to. NHT data is the binary, internal log data from each disk drive, and in general, is not parsable by other than Network Appliance. There is no customer data in the NHT attachments. The email consists of hourly stats and is cryptic at best. Is there a setting to stop these emails from being sent to the "autosupport.to" list? (which is what I assume is happening.) -C.

I haven't seen the data yet but I'm willing to bet that it's the same type of performance data that comes out of DFM. I'm running 7.0 and will upgrade to 7.0.1R1 soon. I use a script to pluck CPU, network and volume info out of DFM and put it into a MySQL database. I then use PHP to generate graphs based on that data. If the format is something like this: 1118612700 2.3 Then it's Epoch time and a value. In this case, it's my CPU utilization. You just need to know what type of values they are (CPU, network, etc.). PHP has built in Epoch time conversion support and it works great with MySQL. Not to mention there's plenty of free charting tools for PHP out there. I only wish DFM had more exportable values. Any chance NetApp would start capturing SNMP values in DFM? Sorry to get off topic. I agree with John on the notification emails though. Good Luck, John T. Or maybe filter them out on the outgoing email gateway, so that they get dropped into the bit bucket when going out. I'm sure you could setup a sendmail filter to process these things before you send them off site. I'm planning on putting a procmail recipe in place so I don't have to see these stats directly, but to keep them logged for posterity. But I'd love to be able to drop them into MRTG or some other tool so I can examine them. Maybe when I get some time I'll bug NetApp about how to look at this data, and possibly how to manage it better. Sorry I don't have a real answer here. Hi , i disagree on this point , i have another 840 it does not have this problem it go by its post check (sensor , watchog , pci scan , memory test , load os) and then it stop and scream : Charging battery dont move ... press control C to abort the charger . Then it resume the boot , once the battery is full . but this 840 simply "freeze" somewhere between pci scan and memory test , nothing else . is it a normal ? F720 2 X2030B error

I put a second copper fibre controller in slot 1 of my F720, slot 8 has the other controller. Slot assignments were looked up on now.netapp.com It gives an error during boot about 2 instances of this card but it does work and see all drives etc. I didn't see anything on NOW that indicated this was an issue or what am I missing here?

About eight years ago when we first set up a filer for a home directory service we knew that we were going to have 25K - 30K accounts, so we split up our home directory tree using the first two letters in the user name. For example, our home directory root is /vol/vol0/h1 so my "scl" home directory is: /vol/vol0/h1/s/sc/scl Eight years ago "options cifs.home_dir" only allowed you to specify one directory for CIFS to find home directories. We therefore set up a directory of symbolic links, one for each user, like this: /vol/vol0/home/shares/scl -> /vol/vol0/h1/s/sc/scl and did this: options cifs.home_dir /vol/vol0/home/shares This has been working just fine. I see that ONTAP 7.0.1 uses the file /etc/cifs_homdir.cfg to list the directories that contain CIFS home directories and you can list up to 1000. All of our user names begin with two lower case letters, so we have 26 * 26 = 676 directories. So we could list /vol/vol0/h1/a/aa thru /vol/vol0/h1/z/zz in cifs_homdir.cfg . It occurs to me that a sequential scan of so many directories to find a particular home directory could be costly. It might be smarter for us to just list our one big directory of symbolic links. I know that WAFL uses hashed directories, so finding an entry, even in a large directory, is fast. However, ONTAP might build some sort of look up table keyed by user name to avoid sequentially searching a large list of directories. If this is true, then ONTAP would probably construct this lookup table even if we list just one big directory of symbolic links. If the single big directory has no advantage, then we might as well abandon it. Can anyone at netapp offer a recommendation here?
