This sunday I upgraded our production FAS940 from 6.5.3 to 7.0 and noticed NFS clients are reporting the user or group quota as the volume size and free space when running df, when 6.5.3 and earlier used to report the qtree quota. I was suprised by this change and so far have been told by NetApp that it is a bug fix, not a bug. Just wanted to send a heads up to the list to let people know, and wondering if anyone else was affected negatively by this. I like part of the idea of the change but was not expecting it at all. Didn't see it in docs. Its interesting but inappropriate for some of our volumes the way we have quotas setup, and it prevents non-admins from seeing if the volume or qtree is nearing full.

Before doing what I list below, I would do a Ctrl-C to get into special boot options, then do a maintenance boot and do an environment status chassis -- Check on your batteries and battery temp. I believe the course of action here is to run a Ctrl-C for special boot options. When given the prompt 1-5, do not choose any. Instead, type: WAFL_check -z -- It'll ask which volumes you want to WAFL_check. Just do vol0. Follow the prompts from there. Cross your fingers. Hey guys, I ran into a problem just now with an inconsistent volume. I believe it was due to the nvram batteries not being in full contact on the nvram card. I reset the batteries and made sure there was contact, I booted up, got a 'dirty shutdown' message and a not about possible data loss. Now, Im stuck at this: rc:ALERT]: Volume vol0 is inconsistent. Please contact. PANIC: Root volume vol0 cannot be mounted. Please run WAFL_check in process rc5 So, what should my next course of action be? Thanks

I don't know about that, I've only just become aware that it can be used and we're on version 7.0.0.1. And I know that I couldn't get it to work before switching on the snapshots using that command. Interestingly enough, and I've not got back to NetApp about this yet, I turned it off again - as I'm still not sure about providing this facility - and it still works. But it definately didn't before turning on that setting. Now that I've switched it off again I keep expecting the facility to disappear, I've been waiting to see what happens. We deliberately turned off showing the snapshots on CIFS because our users were confused about it (most of them have "show hidden files" option turned on). We installed the shadow copy client on their machines to help them do the restores themselves without the hassle of them "seeing" multiple copies of the same files when they do a search or browse through their shares and folders. The Shadow copy client was perfect for our needs - no ~snapshot folders visible, yet users can restore previous versions by themselves. NOTE: Even with show_snapshot set to off in 6.5.3, one can go into the snapshot folders by manually typing in the path, e.g: \\<filername>\<share_name>\<dir_name>\~snapshot\ either in the Run command box or widnows explorer. This would show the traditional snapshot folders. One more reason for us to stay away from 7.0.0.1 for now. Hope NetApp reverts the behaviour back to how it was in 6.5 and earlier versions. You may remember I emailed asking about using Windows Shadow Copy Client as I couldn't see any snapshots. My config is Filer: Data OnTap 7.0.0.1 Clients: Windows XP sp1 & sp2 Snapshots were set to visible from the web gui Jourdan Bailey of NetApp found the solution that resolved the problem and allowed us to use the Win Shadow Copy client: options cifs.show_snapshot on Regards, Iain Barnetson IT Systems Administrator UKN Infrastructure Operations

Although NetApp's OS looks nothing like BSD (it has no user space for instance, and a very different internal structure from any UNIX kernel), we certainly did use a good bit of code from the Net/2 and BSD-lite releases, back when that was being mostly funded by Berkeley and DARPA. As Luke says, we used the TCP/IP stack. Also the boot and locore code for both Intel and Alpha. And although we don't have a user space for commands to run in, we did take chunks of user space code in commands like "ping" and "ifconfig" and massage them into kernel code. I don't know the specifics, but I'd be surprised if we hadn't found more stuff to borrow over the years. I confess that we haven't made any dollar contributions, although if you look at the code contributions I think you'll find that Guy Harris (also of NetApp) and myself were both early contributors. For instance, I contributed cp(1). (When I was done, "cp -R" was a good bit faster than the AT&T version. Instead of doing the copy for a directory in a single pass, I scanned the directory twice, doing files on the first pass and directories on the second. This optimized for the fact that in FFS files in a directory tend to end up in the same cylindar group, so doing the files all together reduces disk seeks.) So at the time, we figured that we gave some code, and took some code -- call it even-Steven. :-) Not that I would object if we found a way to make a corporate contribution. We have made some source contributions to Linux, and I've personally made some contributions to Mozilla, so we are definitely fans of the open source movement. Anyone who uses a NetApp knows immediately that the OnTap OS is BSD, always has been BSD. Considering the Billions (yes, Billions) of dollars in revenue NetApp has derived from the BSDs, I am appalled at the company's lack of contribution back to the BSD community! Considering that a good number of their founders, engineers, and developers were educated at Berkeley (yes the B in BSD), I am doubly appalled at the company's lack of contribution! Now OpenBSD is looking for some storage and NetApp sits by while a POS Dell array is considered? You know, Dell, as in EMC's (NetApp's biggest competitor) biggest partner! HELLO? NetApp? HELLO?
