Have you considered using something like Kazeon (www.kazeon.com<http://www.kazeon.com>) or google search appliance ? These appliances can crawl your filers and index file attributes (and content) and are security aware. You could also use them for ILM type applications... The remote guys would like to be able to do quicker searches through much of this data, probably just by filename. Is there a native NetApp search tool? Any other recommendations? NDMP and Veritas 6.0 ...

Hi ... Good or bad, right or wrong I have never been involved with backups of the Filers that I Admin. It was a decision made long time ago and nobody has ever decided to change/fix it. Anyway, the backup folks upgraded from Veritas NetBackup 5.x to the new 6.0. Since then the backups have not worked reliably. They have involved me now and I am looking for anyone that may have any information. So far all the information that I have been given is that the backups fail with an error 86. This may be related so I am going to ask - we have a SpectraLogic 64000 and they have been emulating a 1000 because when we purchased the 64000 it was not supported by the Filer. Is that still true ... can they stop using emulation? And, in the same line, they are using some sort of emulation on the tape drives as well ... the drives are AIT-4 Sony SDX-900v's. Are they supported?? Sorry to sound so ignorant on this - but as I said earlier, I have not been involved in this aspect of the Filer (until now). And I'm willing to do some digging - pointing me in the right direction would even be helpful. Thanks. - Scott W.

Toasters, No, not Network Time Protocol. Does anyone have any thoughts / comments / experience with NTP Software QFS or NTP Software Storage M&A (www.ntpsoftware.com<http://www.ntpsoftware.com>)? Has anyone even heard of them? The response from a couple guys at NetApp, when I asked, was "What /Who ?", which doesn't give me the warm fuzzies. They've been contacting us since we first purchased our Filers 3 years ago and I wanted to see what the members of this list thought before even getting a eval. Below are some quick highlights on each product. NTP Software QFS: - Prevent unwanted files - Real-time quota and disk policies - Simple enterprise administration - End User support infrastructure NTP Software Storage M&A: - Risk measurement - Trending and projections - Detail file level reporting - Action item reports Thanks for your time. Is anyone using IPSEC between a filer and Solaris 10 ?

If anyone has IPSEC working between a filer (I'm running 7.0.1R1) and Solaris 10, I would love to see your config. On Solaris: /etc/inet/ipsecinit.conf (config file for ipsecconf) /etc/inet/ike/conf (config file for in.iked) /etc/inet/secret/ike.preshared (hide your pre shared keys of course!) On the filer: /etc/psk.txt (hide pre shared keys!) Output of: ipsec policy show ipsec sa show Am I missing anything? I want to use the IPSEC AH protocol to verify the identity of some Solaris NFS clients in a lab with a physically insecure network. Block-Level Backup of Filer Volumes

I'm looking into various methods for tape backup of our filers. Due to the large number of files a file level backup would be significantly slower than a block-level backup method, however I'm not sure if one exists. I was hoping someone could clarify. NDMP utilizes dump, which is file-based so that doesn't solve the performance issues, and from what I can tell SnapVault is only for disk-to-disk backup, not tape. Even if I direct connect a tape robot to the filer I'd still be using dump and the throughput isn't being limited by the network capacity, so that doesn't help either. I'm hoping there is a block-level method I'm unaware of. NDMP in my tests has been dog slow and standard backups via NFS mount don't sound appealing. Suggestions are welcome. benr.

Are you looking for quick restores of random files? Are you looking for quick restores of large chunks of data? Do you have data split across volumes/qtrees, or is it more monolithic? I've found great performance gains by doing my backups against multiple qtrees at a time. This does require that you try to get the users to split up their data a bit more, and help out with the management if at all possible. Can you give more details about your problem space? Filer, disks, network, file system size and number of files, etc? Also try doing NDMP backups in parallel, either at the volume or qtree level. Legato (EMC) Networker can now do NDMP streams, with indexes of files, to disk volumes. This means you can run multiple parallel streams at the same time. Once they are done, you could then clone/stage them to tape either sequentially, or in parallel. I'm starting to really think that disk-to-disk-to-tape is the way to go, but the problem is that people see all that extra disk space sitting around and they try to fill it up. :-) Or ask why they can just have a hundred gigs or so for this new project, we'll cleanup when we're done, honest!
