Fragmentation

Deepak: Just for emphasis, you should not have any framentation on volume that is less than 90% full. The filer reserves, 10% of the volumes disk space to handle framentation. Even with this said, remember the filer buffers write requests and chooses the disk blocks to write to, in memory so that it can make the best decision before handing the request to the raid manager. If you allowed your volume to become over 90% full and continued running (meaning writing) to the disk, then you might have a problem. Don't look for fragmenation unless you meet that condition and remember, it is best to add disk in multiple (3 or more at a time). Rackmounted terminals

Hello, Do any of you have a rack mounted terminal attached to your filer? I have a Wyse 50 at the moment, but wanted to invest in one of the flat screen pull out type of displays if at all possible, in an effort to tidy up my network room a bit. OnTap 6.4, Solaris 8, directory caching

Okay, this is very cool. I updated my pseudo-production F720 for my staff to 6.4 today because I need to test out the newer code for a much bigger filer that is in production for real people :) So, files being dumped into my ~/Maildir/ area (Maildir mail format) as mail is being delivered to me. I am the only person on staff that has this config, rest of the users use /var/mail/<user>. I can watch my procmailrc log and see that mail is being delivered and the filenames involved. But... I turned off nfsv3 and rebooted my workstation and I am now mounted via vers=2,proto=udp and it has been verified via nfsstat -c. Ok, so I'm real new at this so please bear with me. I have a filer running 6.1.3 of OnTap (that's the last version that supports the hardware) and I'm having a tough time getting root on my unix host and my domain administrator for Win2k to map properly to each other. I believe that this is the correct syntax for usermap.cfg Administrator -> root Administrator <- root But this doesn't seem to be working. So, here are my questions: 1. What is the correct syntax? 2. Do I need to be explicit about the domain? 3. Should I map the group Domain Admins and not the individual? If there is anything else that I'm missing feel free to let me know. Thanks.

ONTAP upgrade license?

Here's a continuation of my last question. If I was to somehow procure a legal media kit for a version of ONTAP that's older than the revision currently supported by Network Appliance, Inc, can I get a simple upgrade? Does that require a new license purchase? Can I just buy the unlicensed upgrade media kit from somewhere and then instell that and have it inherit my old license? What about going from version Z.X to Z.Y or something like that? Are the upgrades cheap or free? Purchasable online from a used vendor, or downloadable from netapp.com? ONTAP media kits

Hey there! I have a couple of old used Netapps lying around that I'd like to see if I can do something with. I'm new again to the Netapp community after many years. I'll have to acquire and install all the software on them. However, as I understand from netapp.com (http://www.netapp.com/support/ues.html), all software licenses are voided upon transfer of hardware ownership as occurred with my used appliances. And I don't see any media kits for sale online *anywhere* via google or ebay. Finally, I did find a refurbished Netapp vendor who claims to have a few appliances for sale with the software licenses somehow intact for the OS, NFS, and CIFS. What's the situation with the acquisition of media kits and the transfer or renewal of software licenses? Can you guys help me reconcile whether or not I can legally obtain the following: 1) a media kit (CDROM or download of the OS and whatever accessories) 2) a license to legally install that Is it legal to at least buy/sell an unlicensed media kit? Doesn't that fall under "fair use" of the US copyright law, as a backup copy separate from the license? Or can I download the full media from netapp.com? Then I could buy a license from Network Appliance, Inc. I just need to legally use it; I don't need support from Network Appliance, Inc. I agree about not doing the verification. I have 4 Exchange 5.5 servers with about 60 gig each. 3 of them are on a F820 that is also doing file services for 4000 home directories with a single shared GbE interface. Schedule your verifications for off-peak hours or just don't do them. oracle does not respond during the failover of 960c

We have a clustered node of 960c. During the failover, when we issue cf takeover, all ORACLE DB's became unresponsive, you can not attach yourself to DB at all until the giveback. During the failover, you can browse the mount points, create file on shares etc. I am sure we have tested this out before on other clustered nodes. Completely puzzled why these nodes are not working properly. Toasters- An update on this posting I made last month: We discovered that by disabling Solaris IP Network Multipathing which we use on the Solaris 8 NIS master and slave to provide network redundancy, the filers bind successfully. Just curious out of the respondents who said "I'm using Solaris 8 NIS and DataONTAP just fine", is there anyone else who is using the Solaris 8 IPNM functionality with NIS and DataONTAP? Just to help us isolate the problem between OS and NIS, we initialized a Solaris 2.6 system, as a NIS slave to the Solaris 8 NIS server that we couldn't get the filers to bind to. Surprisingly, the FAS960c bound with no problems to the Solaris 2.6 NIS slave. To us, this rules out a configuration issue with the NIS domain itself and focuses the problem back to an apparent Solaris 8 NIS/DataONTAP incompatibility. I was somewhat surprised that no one replied that they are using Solaris 8 NIS with DataONTAP. I have updated the tech support case I have opened with both Sun and NetApp and I'll keep the list informed as the solution moves along. Thanks, Brent Killion
