Netapp F760

Hi all, I've inherited a Netapp F760, with two FC9 shelves (7x36 GB FC disks). I noticed some discussion earlier on this list about Netapp having a "hobbyist" program, whereby home users could get software updates and license keys for unsupported machines. (Mine is working fine, but only has NFS licensed -- I'd like to experiment with CIFS, HTTP, etc.) Does anyone have any more details about this? I searched the Net but was unable to find any specific information, other than that various people seem to have successfully gotten hobbyist license keys from their Netapp reps. (I don't have a Netapp rep, since I am only a home user). Also, my unit has two broken disks -- one was bad when I got it, and another failed (urk) shortly thereafter. I am curious whether I can simply take a new, empty Seagate ST136403FC disk -- this is the same model number as those in the system now, remove the failed disk from the drive carrier, and swap in the new one? That is, is there anything special about a NetApp-spec disk (special firmware maybe, or something prewritten on the disk, or whatever) that differentiates it from a generic Seagate disk, and would therefore prevent me from using it in the system? If so, is there any workaround? F760 SCSI, Single-ended or Differential

Greetings, I just noticed that my F760 displays, what I believe to be, its on-board external SCSI port as "Fast/Wide, Single-ended" F760> sysconfig -v NetApp Release 6.4R1: Thu Mar 13 22:59:45 PST 2003 .... slot 0: SCSI Host Adapter 0b (Qlogic ISP 1040B, <ONLINE>) Fast/Wide, Single-ended Firmware Version 4.66.00 Clock Rate 60MHz. 4: Tape: Quantum DLT7000 245F 5: Tape: Quantum DLT7000 245F ..... I am/was under the impression that it was a Fast/Wide Differential (on-board) SCSI controller. I have 2 DLT7000 drives connected to the Filer ... and they are absolutely differential (2 drives from a Sun L1000). My Veritas Datacenter software keeps down'ing one of my drives and I have just ignored it due to time constraints plus the fact that I had/have one good drive still working. But now that I am trying to troubleshoot the problem, I do not know if the problem is that I have been lucky that a "Single-ended" filer controller has been providing me good backups to my differential (one) tape drive? (Is that even supposed to work at all?) Can anyone confirm that the output (sysconfig -v) of a F760 "Single-ended" is correct or incorrect? That is, is the on-board external SCSI port a differential or single-ended SCSI port and the "sysconfig -v" message is right or wrong? Regards, Harold White Covaro Networks

Hi, Possibly a bug or reporting difference between DOT 6.4.x and earlier versions. Snapvault error messages

Hi all i am newbiew to filer and storage , i am eager to know following things but unfortunately m not been able to get the rite pointers which can describe the stuffs in detail 1) How exactly the Fiber Channel works ? what are the stuffs involves in setting up a SAN using a Fiber Channel and what are their functions in details along with the alternative devices that too supports the same functions and can be used 2) what is the purpose of space reservation as far as Netapp's Filer FCP support is concern , why people need space reservation for volumes,qtrees or for luns ? 3) what size of volume i need to have if i want 1 TB of lun ? i have read in docs that i should i have atleast 2-3 times volume size if i wanna have lun on the volume that is for 1 TB of lun i need to have 2-3 TB of volume , where the other storage space being used ? 4) what would be the usable lun storage capacity if i create lun of 1 TB ? how much space will get utilized for partition table and keeping file systems metadata ? 5) is it possible to install more then one HBA's on hosts like solaris , windows mechines ? -- Warm Regards, Prashant Desai

I once had to RMA the motherboard on an old 760. After the swap the onboard SCSI changed from single-ended to differential. Since I was not using the motherboard SCSI it was not an issue for me. I now have two 760s one reports motherboard SCSI as single-ended and the other differential. I suspect there are two different motherboard designs for the 760. Graydon Dodson
