Some of the best intrinsic value is transferable support of Network Appliance. The licenses are a costly big deal also. The hardware is not as expensive. As an employee, I can buy one of the top newest filers personally but the hardware cost is a fraction than the licensing. The fact is, without the technical support and the keys to license the software, you are really bound as to what these devices can do. Rich

Factory mode in F800 diagnostics

Hello, Does anyone know how to enter the Factory mode in F800 diagnostics? I have figured out how to enter Manufacturing mode but not Factory mode. I am trying to change the model information on a replacement backplane. Thank you in advance for any help! Acceesing Filer in Workgroup mode.

Hi all, I am running Netapp F230 with Netapp Release 5.2.1, The Filer was a member of a domain, but the users were migrated to another domain, so I ran cifs setup & tried to join it to a new domain, it is throwing up an error, that a computer account has to be created for it to join the domain. Since creating a Computer account is going to take a long time (Dont ask me why..... there are so many issues to that. ). I tried to join it back to the old domain, to my bad luck the security information has been changed, & a new computer account cannot be created in that domain as it is being phased out. So I am stuck now. So I have made it as a member of a workgroup, but users are not able to access the filer, How do you create local users on the filer so that users can logon with that credentials. Or can somebody suggest me a better way of accessing the filer. Regards Manjunath HN

How to sell a netapp

I know this isn't a for-sale list, and I'm not trying to use it for this. But I would like to know what people think is the best way to sell a NetApp. I have three 1T-ish F740's that I am selling, and have tried putting them on eBay, as well as putting the shelves/heads separately on eBay, and the bids were just ridiculously low, so I ended up pulling the auctions. At one time I remember hearing about an ISP equipment mailing list. Is there any preferred list like this, or other common place for selling Network Appliance hardware? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, To join a NT4 domain you have to create a computeraccount for the filer in the domain first. If you are joining an AD "domain" you can create the account from the command line on the filer when you run cifs setup. Thanks all for responding so fast, Timothy and Stephen were the one's harping on resolving the issue to be either at filer end or Veritas end. And this approach proved correct. As soon they asked me to check dump for root volume ... i remembered that i hadn't checked this for root, but done a dump for other volumes , just to ascertain whether the SCSI channel was the issue . I checked the same today, and bingo > dump 0uf nrst0a /vol/vol0 DUMP: creating "/vol/vol0/../snapshot_for_backup.26" snapshot. DUMP: could not create "backup" snapshot : No more snapshots available. Please delete one or more snapshots before trying backup again. DUMP: Dump failed to initialize. DUMP: DUMP IS ABORTED As any backup on our NAS is a Snapshot and backup, so if number of snapshots exceeds the limit allowed by OS , then we cant take any backup on that volume. My problem was some old snapshots lying around, and so the limit of 31 in 6.3.3D11 was reached. I have deleted the snapshots not required, and now all's well. If it fails, it's a problem with the tape or drive. If that works, then I would go to the filer and there are options ndmpd debug 50 and ndmpd debug screen (toggle to turn off all the messages to the screen) ndmpd debug by itself will let you check the values. This will create debug files in the etc directory of the filer. Also, create /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/ndmp so the backup attempt will get logged. Now try a backup with Veritas and you should have some data that you can post or log to either netapp or veritas. Good luck, the error 99s are generic and hard to track down. First, let me say thanks to everyone who responded. Second, it appears that there are no stand alone FC drives on the market now. There are a couple of drives that have native FC support (LTO-2 and STK 9xxx), but they are available only as a part of a library configuration. So in our situation, it looks like we'll just attach the tape drives to the Sun server and back everything up via NFS (hope they don't want CIFS data on the filer!), or they'll have to open the pocket book a bit wider and buy a small autoloader or library. Hi All, We are having a setup of 2 filers with locally attached Tape drives - part of a Multihost Tape librbary . The scheduling & backup control is via a Netbackup 4.5 server via NDMP. The filers as well as the Backup server are a part of a Win2k domain . On one filer, the backup of /vol/vol0 fails specefically after initiation of the ndmp session with the filer. All other volumes can be backed up properly without any such issues. The ndmp session report on the filer is initiated , tape is opened and then it is displays as halted . In netbackup the error code is 99 , which asks you to check the backup file list for invalid entries. The other filer's backup goes well for all volumes including root. I have checked by trying /vol/vol0 or /etc or / as the paths , with no effect.All options seem same on both filers.
