wafl scan question

What exactly does 'wafl scan reallocate' do? Does it actually re-write data in a more efficient manner/layout? Or does it redo inodes and pointers in a more efficient layout without moving data? I know that a reallocate is unnecessary if the measure_layout is low (most of mine are under 2) but on occassion I get higher numbers and wonder what it does to fix this. On the UNIX side, you can also use the dos2unix and unix2dos commands. I have also found Sun's StarOffice to be very useful for manipulating UNIX text files on Windows systems and vice versa. The filer does not do any data conversion that I am aware of. In our experience we have found that folks who use both Windows and Unix do not often manipulate the same file on both systems. Usually Windows files are only manipulated from Windows and Unix files only from Unix. However, we do recommend installing NoteTab Light on Windows and using that instead of standard Windows NotePad. NoteTab accepts all three text file line terminators: LF (unix) CRLF (dos) CR (Apple) and will generate output using any of these. So you can keep a file in its original format or convert it. http://www.notetab.com On the Unix side, Solaris has the "flip" command that converts a text file from LF to CRLF and vice versa. This utility may be available on other flavors of Unix, too. If you don't have flip, here is a trivial awk command to convert unix to dos by adding CR to each line: awk '{print $0 "\r"}' unixfile > dosfile Here is a trivial sed command to convert dos to unix by stripping the CR at the end of the line. sed 's/.$//' dosfile > unixfile On Linux, vi (vim) detects the line terminator style and preserves it. Taking Sun/Solaris out of the equasion: My snapmirror between a F760 and F840 with gigabit interfaces is running at about 300Mb/s with MTU size 9000 and flowcontrol set to none. Without jumbo frames I was seeing throughput of about 200Mb/s. James S. Some background info: Sun client is a 420R running Solaris7, NetApp is F820 running 6.1.1R2. Both are PCI cards. I've checked the NOW sites and tried to change various Sun parameters with no significant differences. Local disk creation takes 35 secs(single drive) vs. NetApp's 7 data/1 parity volume, which produces ~30secs results. Direct tmpfs writes takes 8 secs. Aggregated results in 27.5 seconds, still not much better though. The NetApp support engineer I worked with mentioned it's back-to-back CP bottleneck, that's not on the network side, correct? Does that mean the Netapp F820 can't handle consistent huge data flows? As to Jumbo frame, I haven't tried it yet, the Gbit switch I use probably won't support it, well. Does it adds a lot to the performance? May

That's about what I see on an unloaded gbit interface from an ibm s7a to an 840, but it is still nearly twice as fast as the local ssa disks.
