I'm not an engineer -- just a concerned sales guy, who likes to get a little more technical than is probably good for me. :-) Sounds like you're trying to implement your F85 in a mixed-mode Win2000 domain with LDAP authentication. To my limitted understanding it seems you should be able to do this with ONTAP 6.1 and later. There are three principle documents that address this that I could find in a search on NOW: Win2K overview: http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3113.html Integrating with Active Directory overview: http://www.netapp.com/tech_library/3124.html Win2K technical FAQ for ONTAP 6.1 and later: http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/olio/guides/win2000_6_1_later.shtml I know the second link may seem on the surface not to apply, since you stressed that your issue is not concerning MS Active Directory. However, in Section 2 of that document it does address filer behavior on startup to join the domain in a mixed-mode environment. Matt, I'm a Legato NDMP user and would also be interested in what you find for this mysterious "vendor supplied tape reader" I've been able to recover files from tapes that have exceeded their browse and retention policy by doing a Save Set Recover. This may have been an exception because the media was still in the media database (but recyclable) and save set information was still in the index. I was surprised this worked because I was under the impression that once the retention period was exceeded that the index entries got cleaned out - they did for files but not save set info. Perhaps I'm being obtuse, but isn't the on-tape format of an NDMP backup the same as the native backup stream of the device being backed-up? I'd have though the tapes could still be understood, therefore, by the NetApp restore command. Maybe I've been away from all this stuff too long.. NDMP tape reader

Hello, I hope someone can help me with the following issue. I am not able to recover files beyond my browse policy because the Legato docs say that I cannot use "scanner" but must use a special tape reader provided by my NDMP vendor. However, NetApp have not been able to help so far. I quote from the Legato UNIX documentation on p.475 "The scanner command generates media database entries only for the data backed up with NDMP. You cannot recover data with the scanner utillity or regenerate the file index information. Instead you must use special tape readers provided by your NDMP vendor" Setup: Networker 6.1.1 installed on Solaris 8 backing up a Network Appliance filer F820, Ontap 6.1.1R2. Tape library directly connected to the NetApp using NDMP Question: Does anyone have this special tape reader or know where I can download it? many thanks Matt Musgrove

Home user with a 330 and 520 filer ...

Hi, I purchased a 330 and a 520 filer w/ pretty nice configs (~150gig available). Problem though is that no software is loaded on either NetApp. Ive been checking the now.netapp.com site but no freely downloadable software for these older NetApps. Im wondering if there is any software that I can use for home use that is free (in terms of price)? I see there are versions for different protocols and such..Im looking for a NFS version that I can use(I dont use Windows so no CFIS is needed). So, any hope for me? Thanks.

max path length under ntfs on filer

wee are converting from nfs/unix to cifs/ntfs on filer. some of our path lengths exceed the windows limit of 260[?]. i expect the filer won't care, but maybe the client sw will. has anybody had experience with this? thanks --

Seems there was a thread that touched on this not long ago. I think the limit was actually 256 characters, and I believe it does apply. Will have to go back to check, though. Re: NetShield scanner can't register

Paul, I use Carrierscan but I recall that I did the following... Created an account in the domain for the virus scanning product (carrierscan in my case) to use. I placed that accound in Domain Users and Backup Operators in the domain. In addition I had to put the domain account in the local Backup Operators group on the Filer itself. With that I was able to enable vscan, start and stop the services on the scanning box and the Filer recognized the scanner and registered without a problem.
