We are not using automounter for this volume. The Oracle Binaries are on the local disks as opted by our Oracle DBA's The u01 volume has the Archive Logs so oracle does not fall over with the loss of this volume. However, oracle does pause while the volume is down. I have done a snoop on the system and it looks as though there is an NFS mismatch, whereby its mounted up with NFS version 3, but some time later, it changes to NFS version 1 and then unmounted. Even with automounter, assuming Oracle is actually running, Solaris tends not to umount filesystems with open files on them. I can't speak for the other DBs, but in Oracle you would try and use 2GB or 4GB datafiles. If there's a corrupt block, you'd only need to goto .snapshot/hourly.0 and copy that one 2GB file back to the active filesystem, then start a point-in-time recovery. Correct. But you can place several DB instances, in seperate qtree's, into hotbackup mode and take a snapshot of the entire volume. Takes less time than to shutdown your DB and "waste" one snapshot per instance. Hence, you can consolidate more DB's on a larger volume (read: more spindles) and increase performance overall. Be sure to keep your redo logs on different volume! Snapshot/SnapRestore works on volume basis and not on qtree level. 31 Snapshots mean, you can have 31 backup copies of the volume using Snapshots. When you create a snapshot, it's the entire volume. But with 6.x, you've got 31 snapshots to play with so you can use different snapshots for different databases. Make sense? Is there a way to snapshot an individual QTREE from command line or must it be the entire volume. I have a volume set up for databases and I want to snapshot from command line individual QTREEs that represent different types of databases. Any help would be appreciated! Oracle I/O block size tuning

Our senior DBA asked about Oracle's block size and I/O chunk size settings... are there optimal settings for the two values when running over NFS to a filer (a pair of F740's in our case)? Our Oracle instances run on Solaris 2.6, talking NFSv3 over UDP to the Netapps with 32K block sizes. My first reaction was to say "you don't need to tune this", but what do people use? It sounds natural to me to use 8K block sizes and an I/O chunk size of 4 to take advantage of the 32K NFS reads and writes. Hello, First of all I aplogize on e-mailing my resume to this mailing list on June 9-10 2001. I would bring to attention those who ridiculed my e-mail and making it sound real foolish, that maybe you also were looking for ajob one day and you too have your bad days. You did not fall off from the sky with a cushy desk job which you might be having now. I feel embarassed on being openly ridiculed in a company mailing list. Maybe I should talk to the "right" people ??. to Mr.Fred Berfl, maybe you are not a high powered technocrat, but i am sure you probably know how to use a mailing list to abuse someone else !. You dont have to organize a fundraiser to transport me to Cambridge,UK. Try e-mailing your thoughts about some one superior than you and pick on some one your own size. I am sure you are diligent enough!. Mr.Chris thompson, the same applies to you too. I respect Mathworks as being a great company and I dont want to be bullied by some people who think they are superior than others.Its a pity that this mailing list has characters who have utter disrespect for fellow human beings and their education and who want to display their superiority at every chance they get. I felt this e-mail was necessary to get my point of view across and I refuse to be treated like this for a small mistake of mine.
