null user login accepted

Filers attached to sendmail clients

Dear Toasters, aka Netapp Filer admins: This is my first post, and my first F840. I have a problem with the ONTAP Autosupport email feature. My Filer is directly connected with a crossover cable, on a private network. The attached unix host (part of the larger corporate intranet) is a sendmail client, not a server. Q. How can I get the NetApp Filer, on a private network (and can only talk to this one unix host), to get it's email forwarded to the $MAILHUB which is a centrally-maintained and very reachable from the afforementioned unix host? Surely someone else on this list has a similar config? Or do y'all just have 100 sendmail servers in your organizations? Thx in advance -

Mustafa, I ran through the upgrade without a problem on 3 filers 3 weeks ago. I upgraded 2 740s and one 720. I have one 720 and one 740 doing a Snapmirror to another 740 in a remote location. I had to turn off the snapmirror schedule first on the source filers (snapmirror off) and upgrade the destination filer first. Everything went very well. creation of acls

Type: ftp://ftp.ndmp.org/pub/version.2/contrib/ndmpcopy.1.1/ into your browser. Download the file "jndmpcopy.tar.gz." Unzip and untar and install that. This whould have the -i option both in usage and use. I ftp'd ndmpcopy (both version 1.1 and 1.2) from ndmp.org and compiled the binary. BTW, is it just me or are the install instructions incorrect? I had to run gnu make in lib before running make in ndmpcopy directory. Anyway... Now I have a 1.2 binary but when I look at the useage it doesn't mention an 'i' level anywhere. In the README it does but the binary useage does not. Unable to chown/chmod files

I have inherited configuration of a 740. I struggled for hours trying to install Ontap via CIFs and threw up my hands because I could not map the root volume. So, I tried NFS and did get it to mount and even got the new OS to copy over to the filer. The problem is I cannot change the permissions of any of the files nor change their owner. I _can_ create/edit files. This was particularly irritating when the install script untarred all of the OS files to the filer and the screen filled with "Operation not permitted" messages. Anyone overcome this problem before? Thanks. Note: UNIX style permissions CIFS is disabled (for the moment). NetApp Release 6.1.1R2 NFS client is Linux -John

RE: Performance issue

That's exactly what we're seeing (I'm also seeing some latency doing a save). I had someone from Tech Support tell me he had heard something out of the labs about a problem specifically with MS Office apps. Apparently, the Office apps send out a boatload of questionable RPC requests but ONTAP only responds to about 5 of them and Office waits until the others time out waiting for a response. He promised to send me anything written on it he could find but so far I haven't seen or heard anything else. We're still running Office 97 so I would have thought this issue would have come up and been solved a long time ago. The issue primarily seems to be opening Office files from a share can take 30+ seconds. Other files types don't seem to be such an issue although I've personally seen a tiny text file take 20 seconds to open in Notepad. I've been the lone voice in the wilderness claiming it's not a Filer problem although it sounds like that might not be entirely true. We did see that running NAV with network drive checking enabled significantly made file access slower. We've done extensive testing and trouble shooting with the local NetApp folks. They discovered the NAV problem. The biggest reason I've not been looking at the Filer as a source of the problem is we've experienced the exact same behavior when accessing files from a share on an NT server. That in conjunction with some packet captures we've done seem to point to a problem with NT's TCP/IP stack. The stack starts out using very small packets and takes forever to ramp up to a decent packet size (Win2K is much faster - in tests a Win2K box on 100Mb ran laps around an NT server using Gigabit). We also use NIS as our primary means of authentication on the Filer and we still haven't ruled this out as an issue. I'm certainly interested in learning more about your problem and everything you learn/hear.
