Just as an update: -recall that our current testing has removed any Netbackup or robotics from the picture. It's just a Netapp, a SCSI card, and a DLT drive. :) -I'm indeed certain that we're talking about 100% differential SCSI. -I thought I found the problem when I realized that the DLT drive had a SCSI ID of 1. So I set it to 0, rebooted the filer, power cycled the DLT, and saw no difference :( -I have heard from lots of people who aren't having any problems connecting an F760 to a DLT 7k in an STK 9740, so I know it's not some sort of inherent STK-NetApp incompatibility. But I'm reduced, at this point, to finding any possible difference between the SUN drive (that worked) and the STK drive (that doesn't work) - jumpers, firmware, etc. Thanks for the assistance so far, folks. rob __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If vol1 on filerA is marked as "root" (use 'vol status' to determine this), then you can remove that shelf from filerA and put it on filerB. FilerB will boot this easily. Once that volume is on filerB, you can do a 'vol rename vol1 vol0' to rename the volume. Of course, this will change what your /etc/exports file will look like. If vol1 is not marked as the root volume, you can still move the disks, but you'll need to boot off floppys and chose the 5 option and issue a 'vol options vol1 root' command. FilerA:vol1 -> FilerB:vol0

I have a populated shelf of disks (one RAID group, one filesystem, one full shelf of 7 disks) that is vol1 on Filer A. I want to put it on Filer B, which currently has no disk. Can I do this without wiping the data on those disks, which I need? How do I get the boot and system files on it without destroying the existing volume and filesystem? Until next time... two jukeboxes on one machine

Hey all, got another possiably off topic question... In looking for new backup software, we are having to pay quite a premium for having two jukeboxes hanging off of different machines. I was wondering if anyone knows if a Sparc 20 can handle two DLT 8000 jukeboxes hanging off it doing backups, or if I'd need a better machine? When the drive is DOWN in volume manager (using "vmoprcmd -d" to see state and "vmoprcmd -down N" to mark drive N as down), you can use robtest (which invokes tldtest). From the description it doesn't sound like a problem with robot control. It sounds like a drive problem. F720 Maximum Disk Configuration

Does anyone have a 720 with 14 36GB disks (total 504GB)? Are than any performance issues? Does it require any special release of Ontap? The Now web site mentions this as a possible configuration. Manny

Implementing User and Group Quotas

Friends, We have an F-740 with 14 - 18GB drives (2 hot spares) configured as one large volume. OnTap version 5.3.4R2. Security style is mixed. Currently it is being used by mostly UNIX users, with some Windows users, for Home directories and Project directories. There are only about 15 total active users on the Filer currently. The plan is to move the home directories for the remaining 60 or so mostly Windows users onto the Filer. We would like to implement quotas on the Home directories, e.g. 150MB per user. At the same time, we would like to implement quotas on the Project directories -- my thinking is we would do this via a group quota, e.g. 5GB for Group A, 15GB for Group B, etc. My questions are as follows: 1. Will we need to create separate volumes for Home dir's and Projects, so that the quotas will work as we intend (e.g. a user can own files in his Project directory without it counting against his User quota) -- or can we get away with qtrees? My suspicion is that we will need to start from scratch and create at least two volumes to do this. 2. Suggestions for the best strategy to accomplish this, maintaining all CIFS & NFS metadata? We are currently dumping the filer as one big volume to DLT (<35GB). Does the filer's dump command support dump from a directory, so that we could restore to our new volumes or qtrees? We have a Netapp filer (F760) that we are trying to back up (with Veritas Netbackup, but that's not really relevant to this question) by way of a directly-connected DLT 7000 tape drive in a StorageTek 9740 tape library. We aren't trying to get the netapp to manage the robotic tape handling, we just want to write to the tape that's been manually loaded into the drive. To keep things simple, we are currently bypassing Netbackup and just running the Netapp native dump command. Whenever we do so, we see the following: ********* netapp output below ************** stpnas01> dump 0f nrst0a /vol/vol0 DUMP: Dumping tape file 1 on nrst0a DUMP: creating "/vol/vol0/../snapshot_for_backup.6" snapshot. I am currently evaluating 3 different ndmp backup products. I expect to pick one in about 2 weeks. So far I have been most impressed with Time Navigator by Quadratec Software. I have 2 760's and a Qualstar 4000 Series AIT2 loader. The nice thing is that my 760's are not going to be in production till our fiber switch arrives which is slated for Aug 1, which gives me a nice little test environment. I will post any findings to the list.
