Jeff, do you have NT servers running ADSM? I think last time I looked at this it seemed like you should be able to use ADSM on NT to backup your filers using a CIFS connection to a filer share. See this IBM ADSM FAQ section: --- No, for better or for worse (each to their own..) we are an NT-Free environment. 100% UNIX. And although I can use ADSM via NFS, Id like to keep my application servers running apps, and the filer doing filer things (like backups).

See this IBM ADSM FAQ section: http://www.storage.ibm.com/software/adsm/adfaq.htm#backupnt Note that backing up the UNIX metadata under NT fully captures all filer UNIX metadata, including symbolic links, hard links, block and char devices, etc. And of course it also captures any NT-specific metadata like ACLs. We haven't explicitly tested ADSM on NT from the filer, but all the NT backup programs we have tested have worked fine, so I don't expect any problems. Another Backup Question

I have another backup question -- we're using our toasters with budtool and currently have a 4700 DLT drive (i.e. dlt 4000 with 7 carts). The support cost on the hardware is ungodly ($2700/yr vs buy a new one for $4-5K) and the vendor (PDC solutions) states that it's because that particular jukebox is costly to repair. So my questions are: 1) Anyone know a good jukebox dealer that I can get a trade in on for something with more slots? 2)Anyone know a good model that's affordable? The only one I see is the ADT L500 (14 slot 1 drive), but I don't know how much more Budtool will charge for more slots... 3) Anyone have an idea which jukeboxes are more costy to have hardware support (and which aren't) ? Allocation of PCI slots for ATM

We have what will be a cluster that we want to connect to ATM but with a direct fast ethernet connection to a Sun using a QFE card. When the time came to install the ATM cards we noticed that there was a problem with the allocation of slots. If we follow netapp's recommendation then we don't have room for 2 ATM cards and a QFE card as the last FC-AL card is inserted in a 32 bit card slot. We would prefer to use the 3 32 bit slots for QFE and ATM and use one of the slots reserved for Giga bit ethernet for the last FC-AL card but I suspect that we have missed something. We also tried using slot 5 (a 64 bit slot) for an ATM card with no problems so I wonder why they are restricted to slots 1-3, all that I can think of is that slots 4-9 are 66 MHz slots but I can't find anything in the manual. Any comments? /Michael

Ok..it's been a number of months..so it's time to ask my favorite question. ADSM support. Ive lost a truckload of potential Filer placements in our company (other than the four heads I have in clusters now) due to this missing backup ability, and Id like to know if theres an update on this.

Hello, I have bought the cable to convert the 68 pins to 50 pins to connect the Network appliance F230 with a jukebox robotics Q2.15 ( with two tape drives - DLT 4000) that you told me. I have connect the Cable on the SCSI 0 of my Network Appliance and into the jukebox. This is the configuration that I choice when I installed the budtool( There is some problem in install budtool and delete it ( rm -rf budtool), and the install it again to try install it correct). What is the process to me delete and install again ??? A internal department is splitting off from our group. Our filer is part of a VLAN. Is there anyway to associate a particular network interface with a volume? I would like to create a new volume for the "defectors" and maintain our vlan configuration. I would like the new volume to be accessible by only the interface that will connect their group. BTW, we are using VLANs because the infrastructure here is flat and is all switched. Help with bubtool and Network Appliance !!

Good afternoon, Sorry, I Think that some times I'm being repetitive, but I need Install my jukebox urgently, I paid for support, but it will take two or three weeks yet, so if some one could help me I will stay very glad !! I'm installing budtool 4.5 here in my department and I'm with some problems to recognize the drivers. I'm installing budtool in a Solaris 2.5.1 host to be my Budtool host, because my server is a Network Appliance F230 and I connected on it a jukebox robotics Q2.15 with DLT 4000. I will use the NDMP protocol to send the information like said the manual. I connect my robotics on the Network Appliance with a cable of 68 pins ( because the jukebox is SE 68 pins) to 50 pins ( because in the Network Appliance is 50 pins - SCSI 0 ). Then I active NDMP protocol ( ndmpd on ) im my Media Server. The problem is that I'm installing the budtool to manager the backup and I'm putting this information on the installation : ROBOT_DEV_HOST paje ( paje is the name of my Network Appliance Server) ROBOT_DEV_NAME sjb ( sjb is the name that I give to my jukebox, I m using solaris in my Budtool host, but in the installation of the software said if I'm using NDMP protocol I have to put the name of the machine where the jukebox is connect and to use the spt to my device name ( I tried but give problem too. Can you help me define the correct name to my drivers ????. Remember that my jukebox has two drive ( A and B) that I want to connect both to the Network Appliance Server, which all my data are stored ) ROBOT_SCSI_ID 6 ( It is the SCSI ID that I set in the front panel of the jukebox robotics, you can see it bellow where I will shown the result of the probe-scsi command !!) This is a follow on from from previous discussions regarding the use of Budtool. I have taken over responsability for the backups as Shiona Mceill (former list contributer is on maternity leave). Due to our lack of success with the implementation of Budtool and their recent demise from the UK market, we have decided not to pursue this solution. We have looked at Netbackup from Veritas. Any comments? We are currently looking at Quick Restore from Workstation Solutions. Any comments? As for platforms and configuration: We have 3+ F720 on 2 sites (ONTAP 5.1.2R3). 3 suns running SunOS 5.7, ATL L500 Library (DTL 7000 drive) and potentially in the future a large number of linux boxes. NDMP has up until now been the preferred option as it seems to be the way forward with the NetApps. However, all that I have seen so far indicates that NDMP support in existing backup tools is a bit of a bolt inclusion that does not sit well with existing products or product architecture. In order to configure the multiplatform network, dubious (built in) workarounds have to be made to get the system to work. These vary from additional links being wired into the library (locally attached to a NetApp), so that the unix data can be backed-up, to dummy library configuration for not local (library) attachments to NetApps. All in all, any comments? Hopefully you will be able to tell me that I don't have a clue what I am on about and that it is all straightforward. Somehow I doubt this to be entirely the case, seeing the hoops we jumps through with budtool. here's hoping, Lewis
