Have you priced 630 memory lately? I was quoted $12,000 for a 32 meg nvram, 256 meg system ram upgrade. Thats not dropping to me.
We just paid NetApp $4000 to up the NVRAM on our F330 from 2MB to 8MB. That's over $650 for each 1MB SIMM! When I asked our Sales Rep about the cost, I was quoted the "We do in house testing" line. Anyway, two of the SIMMs we were sent were bad... Very disappointing.
I think it'd work out best for everyone if they just published a list of "approved" vendors for memory and disk. The customers would get a better price, and NetApp would look alot nicer.

Marc,
As I recall, Cisco was requiring 64MB and recommending 128MB on most ISP 7500s over a year ago. Whatever......the point is that memory
requirements
will continue to grow over time.
The good news is that as more features have required more memory, the
price
of memory has dropped at an even faster rate.

another universe where IOS requires 128mb to run? :-p
You can even run a couple of full BGP views in a Cisco with 64mb -- and that's to compensate for Cisco's braindead table archietecture.

We bought RAM and NVRAM a few months ago for our F220. Note these part numbers below are probably only good for the F220. Research before upgrading on your own!
For comparision sake:
NVRAM Dallas Semiconductor - 214-450-0429 Part #90-2229T-070 $84 per meg as of 12/9/97
RAM Kingston RAM via Spectrum Trading - 408-655-4000 Part #KTM8X36L-60G (8Mx36, 60ns, gold) $172 per 32 meg as of 12/8/97
Each of these vendors assured us the products were well tested before being sent to us and we have had zero problems as a result of using them.:
Thu Mar 26 08:00:19 PST [statd]: 8:00am up 102 days, 6:21 2777057436 NFS ops
As an aside, you gotta love the uptimes these NetApps can produce! Anyone have more than a year of uptime? Show us your amazing stats!
For normal RAM, think very seriously before buying anything but Kingston. Normal RAM varies widely in quality.

We got the same part from the same place, and have been using them in our 220s for just about a year now, with no problems whatsoever.

I second this. We only use Kingston in our filers as well.

Any idea on a part number for kingston for a 630. They currently only list a 540. Im not sure if there is a difference other than the fancy case and the processor speed.

Called up the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms regional office and asked, "What wine goes best with an M-16?" The guy who answered did his best to be helpful: "That depends. What are you smoking?"

We bought the same Samsung P/N for DRAM in our netapps. Works flawlessly!

Those 2 Dallas Semiconductor 1 NVRAM simms are $84 quantity 1.

Amen, and I would like some other choices for disk shelfs. DEC Storageworks are dated and cumbersome.

Now that is something that will never happen: NetApp letting you provide your own disk-shelf...
The new shelves (with EMU support) are nice. Much better than the DEC StorageWorks stuff. But, the DEC stuff works.

I received a notice for voluntary recall on those Storageshelf-2 EMU units from Netapp... haven't had any problems with ours yet, thankfully.

Our EMU keeps complaining about a fault on the SS-2, which I'm told is because it's a bit too fussy... I hadn't heard about any recall, what's the story?
