Hi Neil, That is true in the "standard" HSM world. Normally HSM requires several protocols which we do not support, however Enigma Data is doing something a little different. They have a software layer which is bundled together with Vertias' HSM module, and also an Oracle Database portion to keep track of everything. With this combination they are able to move off groups of files which they call projects to tape, optical or other disks and also bring them back if requested. They have some product descriptions on their web site which can give you more detail. It doesn't have all the HSM features, but that's why I suggested to Tom that he check them out to see if the had the features he needed. We have several large oil and gas customers using the package sucessfully and a couple of other customers doing evaluations.

i thought netapp would have to include an hsm api in ontap before this would work?

Hi Tom, Just to let you know, we do have some NetApp customers both using and evaluating a package called Enigma Data. www.enigmadata.com You might want to talk to them and see if their package will meet your needs.

I just took the NetApp backup survey that they sent out and one of the questions was about using hierarchical storage management with filers.
Does anyone know of any HSM products out there that currently work with filers?
Thanks, Tom
thanks. i just did the backup survey. does the question about hsm mean ntap is considering putting support into ontap? [no pressure to answer].
