Hello Toasters,
Currently all of our filers are running ONTAP 7.3.x and we are looking at upgrading to 8.x and perhaps buying some disks/shelves that require 8.x. We would also like to convert to 64 bit aggrs to get beyond the 16T size limit.
As I understand it, there is no way to upgrade an existing 32 bit aggr to 64 bit in place, you need to copy the data. Furthermore, you cannot volume snapmirror 32 bit to/from 64 bit.
I presume you can ndmpcopy 32 bit to/from 64 bit. How about "vol copy" ?
Is anyone running 8.x and migrating from 32bit to 64bit aggrs? How are you doing it?
Is the recommended 8.x release stable? Any serious bugs, issues, or gotchas ?
Thanks,

Same here.

yet. (Talk to a technical sales rep).

Not strictly true. You cannot volume snapmirror from 32 bit to 64 bit. You can do a qtree snapmirror from a 32bit to a 64bit volume. In that respect, it's comparable to the migration from a tradvol to a flexvol, if you were around long enough to recall that.

Dunno. I presume ndmpcopy and vol copy work from 32bit to 64bit, but I haven't tried.

8.0 is useless for us at it is, since there's no easy way to upgrade the data in place, and running 8.0 on some platforms will just cause snapmirror incompatibilities. (We've actually downgraded some new hardware that was shipped with 8.0 to 7.3).
We will be waiting for the inplace conversion to be ready and tested before upgrading our servers.

Our environment uses 64bit aggrs and we're loving it. Packing 32 2TB SATA drives in an aggregate makes a nice big 40T that performs pretty well for sequential workloads. The data set for some of our applications lends itself well to copying data around, we often move data to balance things across our filer heads. That makes easier for us to get to 64bit aggrs for most of the data that moves around, and we utilized qtree snapmirror a lot which works great for that. Vol Copy won't work but ndmpcopy should, thought I haven't tried it, it's basically the same problem as back when we all were starting to move to flex vols, it's a pain for some customers.
I've not seen any gotchas or serious issues yet. 64bit aggr's are not supported in 8.0 c-mode yet, but are supposed to be supported in 8.0.1 from what I understand.
Hope that helps,
-Blake

NetApp's 10gb SFP's are SR multi-mode, not LR.
