We just started migrating our CIFS data from 7-mode to CDOT system. For our remote office data we use riverbed for acceleration and what we are finding out that if "-is-advertise-dfs-enabled" is set to true then it will not accelerate the CIFS traffic. Per Netapp and Riverbed we have to turn this off on the CIFS Vserver for all the data and then enable it for shares we want the dfs advertise to work. Our issue is that we have over 200 shares which do not pass through riverbed appliance and are not affected but we still have to turn it off and there are only about 10 shares for which we want this to be disable. If I follow the solution by Netapp then I would disable on the vserver and then enable it for the 200 or so shares manually and also I have to remember it to do it for new shares.
We use DFS for name space only and not for replication. What I am not clear is to what this setting would do if I turn it off for all the CIFS data? Does that mean I cannot map the drives using dfs path or something else. Anyone has run into similar issue and what did you do to resolve it. Any help is appreciated.

We are upgrading our Riverbed to the latest version this Friday but we have been told by Riverbed that even after the upgrade we have to disable the dfs advertise on the SVM and then enable on a per share basis.

Do you know what that controls? DFS advertisements must not have been in place in 7-mode because I have active 7-mode filers using the same Riverbed with SMB2 and no issues, but what do they do in CDOT?
Also, fun fact- if anyone is tempted to get around this by going back to SMB1, you won't be able to do virus scanning. The CDOT virus scanning system relies on SMB2 to work.

Is “this” in your question refers to “DFS Capability” advertisement?
DFS Referrals are used both in 7-Mode and C-Mode, that is what allows widelinks to work. Here there is no change. When you enable widelinks for a share in 7-Mode, you also enable “DFS Capability” advertisement for this share.
The apparent differences are
· until 8.2.3 it was not possible to turn off “DFS Capability” advertisement at all, you could just turn off actual symlinks processing. This is in contrast with 7-Mode where advertisement is off by default. I assume the reason is pretty simple – you need DFS to redirect client to optimal LIF, so this feature is useful even without any symlinks.
· in C-Mode it is not possible to enable symlinks processing without also enabling widelinks. Whether this is intentional I do not know.

Do you know what that controls? DFS advertisements must not have been in place in 7-mode because I have active 7-mode filers using the same Riverbed with SMB2 and no issues, but what do they do in CDOT?
Also, fun fact- if anyone is tempted to get around this by going back to SMB1, you won't be able to do virus scanning. The CDOT virus scanning system relies on SMB2 to work.

We had a similar issue- can you upgrade the RIOS version on your Riverbed? We were told that that would fix the issue.

We upgraded our riverbed to the latest version and the issue went away. No changes were made to the Netapp side.

Is “this” in your question refers to “DFS Capability” advertisement?
DFS Referrals are used both in 7-Mode and C-Mode, that is what allows widelinks to work. Here there is no change. When you enable widelinks for a share in 7-Mode, you also enable “DFS Capability” advertisement for this share.
The apparent differences are
· until 8.2.3 it was not possible to turn off “DFS Capability” advertisement at all, you could just turn off actual symlinks processing. This is in contrast with 7-Mode where advertisement is off by default. I assume the reason is pretty simple – you need DFS to redirect client to optimal LIF, so this feature is useful even without any symlinks.
· in C-Mode it is not possible to enable symlinks processing without also enabling widelinks. Whether this is intentional I do not know.

This is no longer the case as of 8.3(.1), where you have new share options regarding symlink properties. As long as symlinks are all local to the volume and don't require dfs to work, you can now set the properties to symlink-only or some such avoiding DFS referral advertising while allowing for symlinks that don't depend on it.
