Should we consider having a small blurb added to the end of posted messages with instructions on subscription maintenance? Or perhaps an automated message sent out on some regular schedule (monthly?) describing the purpose of the list and how to subscribe/unsubscribe, access the archives, etc.
A couple of other lists I'm on do this, and we rarely see unsubscribe requests sent to the list itself.

This is a mailing list, not a democracy. :-)

About once a year I send out a notice saying "here's how to do it". That's usually because the number of people sending "remove" requests to the list increases to the point of noticing it. I really don't see the point in adding all that extra text to *every* post, just to stop a coupla of people from sending "remove me please" now and then.
An automated message every 3-6 months might be ok; mailman (or whatever it is) does that, but the (default?) monthly notices drive me batty.

Public ridicule works, too..
A big red "L" on their shirt, if you know what i mean... :-)

With the flurry of unsubscribe requests going to the list lately, I thought I'd take this opportunity to remind everyone how to get off this list correctly.
If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, you can send mail to majordomo@mathworks.com with the following command in the body of your email message:
unsubscribe toasters <your email address>
There is a list archive (searchable, even) available on the web at http://teaparty.mathworks.com:1999/toasters/
K.
I have taken to doing this to my majordomo configs:
message_footer << END -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Archives: http://xxx.xxxxxx.xxx/MailArchives/?list=$LIST Charter: http://xxx.xxxxxx.xxx/engineering/labadmin/info/lab-lists.html -----------------------------------------------------------------------
message_fronter << END *** sent via $LIST. See end of message for list information. ***
One could place the instructions in the footer, if it turns out that lusers are unwilling/unable to follow the links for instructions.

A monthly message would be quite good. The other option is to have it moderated to drop these remove messages, but I don't think that's really appropriate for the toasters list.

My experiences with setting the administrivia filter in majordomo have been pretty dismal. Ultimately creates more noise when people use the list to try to figure out why the heck they can't send a message about how to subscribe to another list, etc.
