I think it would be really nice to have something like this setup so that we could get console access to our netapps via the network. I'm curious as to what's available and what other people have setup to accomplish this. The cheaper the better.
Thanks Dan

Cyclades makes a number of very nice network serial consoles in a range of port densitys.
Thanks, Matt

Pay a visit to www.conserver.com. Their software is open-source, and their website also discusses serial concentrator hardware & other alternatives.
Regards,
The majority of our Sun and NetApp servers are accessible through Bay Networks Remote Annex. Of course, you can't buy these new anymore, but there is a good market for them on ebay. These are great little boxes because they easily display the console history (great if something crashes and you want to know why), but they are dated and they don't support the latest security features (ie, you have to telnet to them). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3023468321&catego...
We've also started using Digi International Portserver 16. We've only got a couple in house, but these are nice because they provide much better security (ie, SSH, RADIUS, etc) and do some console logging, although it's a bit kludgy compared to the Remote Annex.
For dire situations off-site, we've even been known to hook up a null modem cable to a laptop and connect to the laptop using PCanywhere. But that's usually a last ditch effort.

we use digi etherlite 32 (rj45-db9) console servers and they work great and help keep our cabinets looking clean. it works for consoling into all of our servers, routers, switches, and even our power strips too.
you'll also need to get the rj45-db9 (PC-1) adapters from baytech.net

www.conserver.org - we're using it to connect six F7x0 Netapps along with a bunch of Solaris boxes to 11 terminal servers across two buildings. Works great for us.
