If vol1 on filerA is marked as "root" (use 'vol status' to determine this), then you can remove that shelf from filerA and put it on filerB. FilerB will boot this easily. Once that volume is on filerB, you can do a 'vol rename vol1 vol0' to rename the volume. Of course, this will change what your /etc/exports file will look like.
If vol1 is not marked as the root volume, you can still move the disks, but you'll need to boot off floppys and chose the 5 option and issue a 'vol options vol1 root' command. (Or something like that... I don't have a filer handy at the moment to verify)
Hope that helps.

I have a populated shelf of disks (one RAID group, one filesystem, one full shelf of 7 disks) that is vol1 on Filer A. I want to put it on Filer B, which currently has no disk. Can I do this without wiping the data on those disks, which I need? How do I get the boot and system files on it without destroying the existing volume and filesystem?
Until next time...

Please note that the drives will have a different serial number than the new system. They will need to be 'taken over' by the new system before you can bring the volume online and make it root. You are best off making it root on the old system first.

And let us not forget that if the "vol1" disks are clean, or have data on them but there is no /etc directory on it, it will go right into setup and complain about a few tings missing, like timezone stuff and java stuff.
Do yourself a favor, mount the "vol1" on a host someplace as root/Administrator. Then do an "upgrade" to vol1. This will simply put the needed files in place. Then do the following on your current filer:
vol offline vol1 halt --> physically remove vol1 and attach it to the new filer -->boot up the new filer with disks attached --> boot from from floppy for this release --> when you get to the 1-5 menu, choose #5, Maintenance Mode. --> now issue the following: vol online vol1 vol rename vol1 vol0 vol options vol0 root reboot (Without the floppies)
When the system comes up, it will be like it just came from NTAP. Follow the prompts to get it up on the net.

Do you have to run the download command?
