We're going to be using CIFS on our filers and I would like to hear about anyone's experiences with CIFS especially using it under NIS.
I tried briefly enabling CIFS about a month ago on one of our filers, using NIS, and it worked, but the filer started having problems only a few minutes later, so I disabled CIFS and NIS. The problems were pretty severe ... of the "did someone shut nfs off?" variety, but I didn't have much of a chance to investigate. We are running 4.1d.
We're using Solaris boxes as NIS servers.
For my next try at CIFS, I'm thinking about not using NIS and just using a text copy of the passwd and group files.
Has anyone else tried and/or had problems with CIFS under NIS?
No experience with CIFS, but I had set up our NFS box to use NIS for a couple of weeks. We had a number of odd problems on our Sun servers with NIS that led me to be concerned about using NIS on the filer (I had noticed some NIS server processes just hanging, and also noticed that running ypwhich on the filer every 10 seconds or so showed that it would change its NIS binding regularly). I don't think the filer caused any problems for the Sun NIS servers, but to play it safe and isolate the filer from the problems, I decided to just use a text copy of /etc/netgroup. I like this solution better simply because the filer is no longer dependent on any other machine to do its work, keeping things much simpler.
